It's For Sure A White Man's World In America......
A quote from one of my favorite movies, Being There with Peter Sellers. Trump's speech, and everyone fawning all over him, made me think of that movie and this scene in particular. Everybody oohing and aahing about how "presidential" Trump looked as he gave a speech with all of the substance of Chance the Gardner telling us "in the Spring there will be growth". I suppose it may be out of a sense of relief that he didn't give a reprise of Hitler's "Appeal to the German People" or that he didn't stand in front of Congress and drool all over himself on national television, but the amount of praise that was forthcoming for a speech that basically told us nothing is disconcerting at best. I suppose, if anything, it proved that Trump actually CAN read, albeit off of a teleprompter (and we don't know if there were pictures that accompanied the text to help him through his address).
I suppose the most galling part of this is that after 8 years of listening to President Obama being thoughtful and intelligent that the pablum offered up by Trump would be met with such approval. While Obama's every word was parsed and dissected for any sign of fault, Trump gives one speech where he doesn't act like a raving lunatic and he's declared the second coming of William Jennings Bryant. But that's America today. Land of the Kardashians, Dancing with the Stars and the star of a reality show as President. All hail the man with "rice pudding stuffed between his ears, short-changed by the Lord and dumb as a jackass". We get the government we deserve.
