Democrats to highlight a red state's success with Obamacare in response to Trump speech

President Trump's first major congressional address this week will be met with a Democratic response highlighting the success of Obamacare in a state that Trump won.

Former Kentucky Gov. Steve Beshear, a strong supporter of Obamacare and Medicaid expansion, will deliver the Democrats' rebuttal to the president's first address to a joint session of Congress on Tuesday.

"Nobody is better equipped to talk about the successes of the [Affordable Care Act] than he is," said Congressman John Yarmuth of Kentucky. “In terms of lowering the uninsured rate and people getting preventive care, the numbers in Kentucky are staggering."

While governor from 2007 to 2015, Beshear led the state in lowering its rate of people without health insurance from over 20 percent to 7.5 percent, one of the biggest improvements in the nation.

1. It's interesting to see the republican talking heads...

They want Medicaid expansion tied to work.

The thing about Obamacare is that it was a step toward separating health insurance from your job.

Medicaid expansion in a growing economy would be a small business incubator. A lot of bigger companies want to outsource certain tasks, but the cost of health insurance prevents a person from quitting their job at a big company and starting a business (like a small contractor for example).

The republicans want us to all work for big business and if you aren't willing to work for big business, then you have their permission to die.

3. to say nothing of the economic value of healthier workforce.

so many miss the fact that a lot of what is in the aca is actually about making healthcare just that. not sick care, but preventive care, early detection, and fixing things that could otherwise lead to disability.
there will be so many downstream gains if we can keep it. bad healthcare is the most expensive kind. cracking down on medicare readmissions is leading to comprehensive changes in care for seniors.
i read about one hospital that looked at the problem, and is doing all kinds of things that keep seniors out of the hospital-
home visits to check for trip hazards, and grab bars. even trimming toenails.
they started sending paramedics to do checks on chronic illnesses, instead of making folks come to the doc's office. they found out what a problem it is, and how many people didnt get enough care because of it.
help getting meals.
just all around real care which cut down on hospital stays and helped people stay out of nursing homes.

then there is data mining for outcomes and best practices. an obvious opportunity because it also requires electronic medical records.

i could go on. not just about the exchanges.
and you are right, it can do much for small businesses and growing entrepreneurship.

funny how the right thing so often turns out to also be the smart thing.
