(145,666 posts)From the article cited in the OP
* Republican Party: Republicans had been open about their hopes that Ellison would win the chair's race, believing his strongly liberal record and past controversies would give them a useful punching bag for years to come. Perez, while still quite liberal, is not the lightning rod that Ellison would have been. The search continues
The GOP wanted to run against Ellison and his religion. Trump was hoping to split the Jewish vote from the party and pit the ADL (which had issues with Ellison) against the rest of the party. That will not happen
virtualobserver
(8,760 posts)is a fool's game. The Jews in Victoria, TX who opened their synagogue to their Muslim brothers and sisters would have been perfectly comfortable with Ellison.
What the GOP believes is of no consequence.
Gothmog
(145,666 posts)The ADL has some real issues with Ellison that were never resolved. The Victoria synagogue is in my neck of the woods and I am good friends with some of the people in the Victoria Democratic Party

(8,760 posts)I would, however, like to feel that Muslims are welcome in the Democratic party, even those who have grown away from Farrakhan.
Gothmog
(145,666 posts)Some of my best friends in the part are Muslim precinct chairs in my county. The running joke is that I as a Jew have more in common with the Muslim precinct chairs compared to some other precinct chairs in my county
I would like to point out that there are posts on DI predicting that the election of Ellison would increase Jewish voter turnout for Trump. The DI idiots making these claims do not realize that so long as Bannon is associated with Trump, Jews will not be supporting trump. Trump hates Muslms and wanted to run against Ellison and to use his religion against him. From what I have seen of the GOP, Trump would have been able to flame the Islamophobia of is base using Keith's religion.
I have met Ellison on a couple of occasions and I like him. I just like Tom Perez a great deal more due to his his work on voting rights. Perez rebuilt the Civil Rights and the voting rights sections of the DOJ. This article was cited on another thread but his quote makes me smile http://prospect.org/article/subtle-force-tom-perez
In October of 2009, Perez was finally confirmed and set out to reform a division in disarray. Under Bush, the division was accused of ousting career prosecutors who were insufficiently conservative and punishing those who didnt leave. In his early months, it reportedly wasnt uncommon for staffers to break down in Perezs office as they recalled the trauma. Within a year, Perez turned around morale and transformed the division into a formidable enforcement machine.
The group in Victoria also makes me smile. I have not seen the Victoria Democratic county chair in a while but will be mentioning this next time I see the Victoria county delegation.

It's time to stop blaming everybody else. Conservatives in the party own this.

(14,249 posts)And are you claiming that a majority of Democrats support Sanders?
If the latter is the case, Bernie is a piss-poor politician who, despite having majority support, couldn't beat Hillary Clinton and can't even get his own DNC Chair elected in party in which he controls the majority.
maryallen
(2,172 posts)Characterization of Senator Sanders as a "piss-poor politician" was a divisive remark.
EffieBlack
(14,249 posts)I was simply pointing out that your suggestion that Sanders commands the support of a majority of Democrats is ridiculous.
It's funny, though, that you complain about "divisive remarks" in a discussion in which you trash the actual majority of the party because they don't support your preferred candidate.

Hopefully Perez & Ellison can get the DNC's shit together in the next 18 months. The DNC has apparently forgotten entirely about party unity, local politics, or how to win elections.

(31,261 posts)not from sometime friends. So go to a party that you are comfortable with. Bullcrap about a "wing" of the Democratic Party displays utter cluelessness. (42,862 posts)... they'll either vote for Democrats, or they won't.
If this (so-called) "Bernie Wing" believes it has power and influence, then their first order of business should be to get Bernie Sanders to actually join (permanently) the Democratic party.
If the "Bernie Wing" could convince him to do that, and if Bernie actually did that, I think he'd earn more respect and he'd have the moral authority to have more influence in guiding and shaping the party.
But he hasn't, and he won't, so he doesn't.
Hortensis
(58,785 posts)and the DNC members who did the voting knew exactly what the DNC chair had to be able to do for their committee. The notion that this is a momentous choice is greatly overblown. Mostly they just chose the person they thought would handle an administrative, schmoozing, coordinating, fund-raising job better--barely.
And Chris Cilizza is a conservative sleazebag. His very predictable statement that Warren/Sanders are much weaker than thought is just his own wishful thinking. As usual.
The DNC chair does not choose the direction of the party. Far from it.
virtualobserver
(8,760 posts)To quote Tom Perez......"We heard loudly and clearly yesterday from Bernie supporters that the process was rigged, and it was. And you've got to be honest about it"
then later that night he said that he "mispoke"......no longer "honest about it,"? you tell me.
NoGoodNamesLeft
(2,056 posts)Trump would not be president right now. If Ellison were elected DNC chair then the majority of Jewish voters would leave the Democratic Party because they don't trust Ellison and view his as being anti-semitic. People and groups unwilling to unite against a common enemy should never be rewarded for doing the wrong thing in order to try to force everyone else to give them what they want when the majority wants something else.
Sorry for all those Bernie supporters who united and did the right thing, this is NOT about you at all...but it's time for those that idolize Sanders as if he's the second coming of Jesus to stop trying to make everything about Bernie-fucking-Sanders because it's making some of us really hate him.

Blue_true
(31,261 posts)Democrats that run for office need to work to insure that every choice they make in their official or personal life is beyond reproach. Hillary did nothing wrong with the emails, BUT, she should have had State Department IT and Security set up and manage everything, including her home server. Republicans fight very dirty, they will lie about the smallest oversight.

(31,261 posts)Far left people like Nader, Sarandon, Stein West, Smiley abandoned the party long ago for their tilting at windmills. So, if someone is so upset that they timeout, so be it, Democrats need people that can be counted on at crunchtime.

(115,899 posts)With Perez as chair and Ellison as deputy chair we've got solid leadership; what's gone (for good, I hope) is the Debbie Wasserman Schultz wing of the DNC. Ideologically there's not much difference between Perez and Ellison; and both are clearly aware that the party needs to get busy at the grassroots level. Despite what Cilizza stupidly suggests in the cited article, Ellison is not the equivalent or representative of Bernie and Perez is not the equivalent or representative of Hillary. The fact that Perez won does not mean the progressives lost; Perez and Ellison are very much on the same page. The DNC election was not a Hillary vs. Bernie proxy fight, although some would like to think it was. The important thing now - the only important thing - is getting back to the grassroots and organizing to defeat the GOP and Trump. I think this is a good first step.

Ellison was my favorite, but I actually kinda wanted him to stay in Congress, so Deputy Chair works for me.
Perez is a very good technocrat. And we NEED one of those. Part of our problem was believing polls and counting our chickens before they hatched. Perez is a realist and a hard worker. He will put the needed infrastructure in place to to ensure that we start winning.
