The corporate powers that be convinced the Democrats to adopt their position, which was obviously also the Republican position, so then Republicans have been forced to demonize their own position, given that "base" politics is all about being against the other side no matter what. So here they are trying to get short term political gain from attacking a position that in the long term is the position they not only would take, but in Romney's case DID take, in the first place.
