(2,065 posts)Back when my day job was being a professional pan flutist with an Andean band back in San Francisco, I would experiment with magic in my spare time. I found an herbal love charm written about in a book entitled Magical Herbalism by Scott Cunningham. I followed his instructions and sure enough, each time I did the love charm, it would bring some new lady into my life. And being an astrologer, I noted down the exact date, time and place of my love charm, booted up an astrology chart for it on my astrological software, and studied the natal astrology charts of the women whom the love charm brought. And there were definite linking planetary configurations between what was happening in the heavens when I did my love charm and the natal astrology chart of the woman who the charm attracted.
You say that magical spells are no different, no more effective than prayers, but actually, magical spells are going one step further than prayers and utilizing various occult and metaphysical forces to bring your desired result to come to pass. And so, in my experience, magical spells can often be more effective than prayers alone.
For many who were previously skeptical materialists, magic has really opened doors for them, and opened their eyes to the fact that there hidden (occult) metaphysical forces that transcend ordinary physical cause and effect, and operate on a higher level than the latter. It has opened their eyes that there is something beyond the physical world and superior to it. As for me, I chose to renounce the herbal love charms, even though they worked. My reason was spiritual, and it could be summed up in the phrase, "Bind not, so ye be not bound."

...actually finished the job? Can anyone point to a single thing -- or was it the collective effort, body and soul, of the millions who opposed the Axis?
Which prayer among the millions that went up from churches and synagogues had an influence? The prayers and rituals from temples, groves, and covens were as heartfelt, and probably a lot more focused.

(55,894 posts)Immediately following Britains declaration of war in 1939, Dion Fortune began a series of regular letters to members of her magical order, the Fraternity of the Inner Light, who were unable to hold meetings due to wartime travel restrictions. With enemy planes rumbling overhead, she organised a series of visualisations to formulate seed ideas in the group mind of the race, archetypal visions to invoke angelic protection and uphold British morale under fire. The war has to be fought and won on the physical plane, she wrote, before physical manifestation can be given to the archetypal ideals. What was sown will grow and bear seed. As the war developed, this was consolidated with further work for the renewal of national and international accord. For the first time the Fraternitys doors were opened to anyone who wanted to join in and learn the previously secret methods of esoteric mind-working. With unswerving optimism she guided her fraternity through the dark days of the London Blitz, continuing her weekly letters even when the bombs came through her own roof. from the introduction to The Magical Battle of Britain, from the letters of Dion Fortune, edited by Gareth Knight

(752 posts)I read was Moon Magic. I have all of her books --Sifting through one finds gems, but mixed in with a noxious racial separatism. She died of leukemia and said that she got the illness because she was weakened from fighting the Nazis on the astral plane. They were researching esoterica as well. Don't know why the mental floss article doesn't mention her. She was wayyyy more interesting than Aleister Crowley. Her books on the Kabbalah and psychic self defense are pretty darn good.

(With Tarot Tower Card Upright)
I call upon you
To bind
Donald J. Trump
So that he may fail utterly
That he may do no harm
To any human soul
Nor any tree
Animal
Rock
Stream
or Sea
Bind him so that he shall not break our polity
Usurp our liberty
Or fill our minds with hate, confusion, fear, or despair
And bind, too,
All those who enable his wickedness
And those whose mouths speak his poisonous lies
I beseech thee, spirits, bind all of them
As with chains of iron
Bind their malicious tongues
Strike down their towers of vanity
(Invert Tower Card)
I beseech thee in my name
(Say your full name)
In the name of all who walk
Crawl, swim, or fly
Of all the trees, the forests,
Streams, deserts,
Rivers and seas
In the name of Justice
And Liberty
And Love
And Equality
And Peace
Bind them in chains
Bind their tongues
Bind their works
Bind their wickedness
So mote it be!
So mote it be!
So mote it be!

(9,446 posts)Down at the bottom they added this update:
Update: To clarify, the original document states that this is a binding spell, which seeks to restrain someone from doing harm instead of harming the targeted individual themselves. Binding does not generate the potential negative blowback to the casters karma.
So it's not meant to harm tRump but to prevent him from harming others including the planet and animals.
politicat
(9,808 posts)A binding asks the universe to prevent the target from committing harm to others. It's basically asking for whichever power is listening to enforce the law or the rede. It's not asking for harm to befall the target, it's requesting the target's worst intentions be frustrated.
It's no different from asking for protection or praying for someone who is causing harm to experience change.
Also, not everyone who is pagan ascribes to that interpretation. For polytheists, it's theologically difficult (and potentially risky) to address a power with a request that violates that power's sphere of influence. Service to Janus, for example, (of thresholds, entries and transitions) should only be practiced in time of war or conflict, and Janus service was generally a binding, with the intention to keep the enemy beyond the gates. (Of course, given Roman politics, the Janus temple was usually open 24/7/365.) In times of peace, the service should instead go to Securitas, the goddess of security, and to Portunes (locks and keys) and Minerva, in her aspect of bearer of the keys. Acknowledging Fortuna never hurts. Even the supposed "curse tablets" are more along the lines of requesting the cthionic powers to restore justice. (Most curse tablets were probably written by people who had been wronged and had no other recourse than the gods.)
There's a lot of Christian-cultural and (for lack of better term) PR influences in those versions of Wicca that steer hard towards a theological and public purity. There are a lot of reasons for that, from cultural history to current events to the fact that there are very few even second generation practitioners, so the vast majority of practitioners have come from a guilt/shame monotheism. But theology is a complex, intricate subject, and interpretation is not for amateurs or those who want 5 easy shortcuts to higher power. It's not like other faiths don't have internal disagreements about doctrine, dogma and practice, too.

(30,151 posts)Angela Sanford, a self-proclaimed witch, was sentenced to 20 years behind bars Friday for stabbing a New Mexico man to death during a Wiccan sex ritual.
Sanford, 31, brutally murdered Joel Leyva, 52, with a dagger after persuading him to have sex. During intercourse, the Albuquerque witch unsheathed a ceremonial knife, called an athame in Wiccan practices, and then stabbed Leyva 13 times in the head, neck, back, and abdomen.
March of last year, when the homicide took place, Sanford was arrested and claimed the killing was done in self-defense. According to the Wiccan woman, she and Levya were on a popular hiking trail in Albuquerque when she became afraid he would rape her. To stave off his advances, she convinced the middle-aged man she wanted to have intercourse, and then disemboweled him.
Detectives arrested Sanford and a Bernalillo County grand jury indicted her not long after. She pleaded no contest. Meanwhile, her lawyer contested Levya's violent past and paranoia was the cause of the killing, according to Eyewitness News.

(5,624 posts)It was the summer of 1940, just weeks after a narrow escape by the British armies at Dunkirk, and the United Kingdom was braced for the onslaught of a threatened German invasion.
On the nations South Coast, one of many areas in danger of invasion from the sea, towns and villages were transformed by sandbags, barricades, and barbed wire into coastal redoubts where volunteers kept watch on the sea and the sky. The Battle of Britain was yet to reach its peak, but the drone of enemy planes could be heard flying overhead.
In the town of Highcliffe-on-Sea, the story goes, a secretive group of witches and spiritual seekers resolved to do what they could to defend their country. Its said they arranged to meet in an ancient forest before midnight on August 1, 1940the eve of Lammas Day, a harvest festival and one of the Greater Sabbats of the neopagan religion known as Wicca.
There, they are said to have staged a magical assault on the mind of Adolf Hitler in distant Berlin, by means of a ritual that became known by the mock military codename "Operation Cone of Power."
According to Gerald Gardner, the retired British civil servant who founded modern Wicca, the magical assault was based on secret knowledge passed down through generations of English witches. In his 1954 book Witchcraft Today, Gardner wrote that invasions had been turned back by magic twice before in English historythe first in 1588, when the Spanish Armada became discouraged after being scattered by storms, and then in 1805 when Napoleon called off his planned invasion of England.
An English folktale relates that the British admiral at the time of the Armada, Francis Drake, had joined a group of "sea witches" at a headland called Devils Point, near the naval port at Plymouth, to attack the approaching Spanish ships with a magical storm. It is said that on foggy days at Devils Point, the disembodied chants of Drake and the witches can still be heard. And in the early 19th century, Gardner wrote, another group of English witches cast spells to deter Napoleon.

(21 posts)The power of the wyrd, the belief in old magic, the other worlds, and connection to the land goes back millennia.
The history of WWII has many instances of how England should not of withstood the superior fire power of the third Reich.
Battle of Britain, aborted invasions, the blitz, code breaking, emergence of radar, Churchill channeling his inner god, so many near misses.
A lot of it can go down to the plucky British spirit and defending Albion, but I'm convinced that something otherworldly also kept the island safe.
I'll be lighting a candle and saying something to join in, that's for sure. Power of love to bind and prevent harm and all that.

Carefully noted - the whole idea of "binding", not hexing, which evidently adds a negative backspin. Or so I presume, not being an expert in these things (although I was into the Ouija Board and automatic writing when I was younger, and I became pretty proficient in Tarot card reading).

And many of us have to re-learn how to use it as adults.
A lot of adults in the western world have extremely atrophied imaginations.
And for many, it's sown with fearful seeds at church.
I would go on and on and on regarding how important it is to use our imagination.
And also how powerful it is when many people come together to use their imaginations together.
Think of going to the theater. Putting on a play. Suspending your disbelief and letting the story unfold.

(365 posts)The word witchcraft has such explosive connotations for many people. I do not have any problem with it as I embrace the natural world and feel strongly we are all connected in a very quantum manner. If one thinks of this as collective meditation which has been shown to have a very positive and actual effect, then it might be more palpable for many out there who might be triggered by the "W" word. Also, scientists detected very strange and demonstrable effects concerning collective consciousness during 9/11. I am trying to remember the exact study which was taking place at the time. If anyone knows that data/link, it might be helpful for those out there doubting the power of collective thought and intention. It is all about intention! Just craft a powerful spell designed to take away the power of Trump and Co. to do harm. Since doing harm to others is also doing harm to oneself, those who work the spells/make the prayers will actually be doing Trump a favor, so it is all completely benevolent.

https://extranewsfeed.com/a-spell-to-bind-donald-trump-and-all-those-who-abet-him-february-24th-mass-ritual-51f3d94f62f4#.7lun6zjos
Update: To clarify, the original document states that this is a binding spell, which seeks to restrain someone from doing harm instead of harming the targeted individual themselves. Binding does not generate the potential negative blowback to the casters karma.
Supplies
Unflattering photo of Trump (aka any picture of Trump)
Tower tarot card.
Tiny stub of an orange candle (think one of Trump's fingers).
Pin or small nail
White candle, representing the element of Fire
Small bowl of water, representing elemental Water
Small bowl of salt, representing elemental Earth
Feather, representing the element of Air
Matches or lighter
Ashtray or dish of sand
Optional items include pyrite (or fool's gold), sulfur, and black thread. The document also says that you can substitute the orange candle for a baby carrot.
At this point, you are to light the picture of Donald Trump on fire and let it burn until it turns to ash as you passionately exclaim "so mote it be!" three times. If you do not like that phrase, you can exchange it for one of Trump's signature catch phrases, such as "You're fired!" Then you snuff out the white candle and end the ritual.
After performing the ritual, the document says it is important to have a good laugh at Trump's expense (think about how much he would hate being laughed at) and have a bite to eat (but not that carrot, though) because all that spell-casting is hard work. Then you are to discard the orange candle by burying it, discarding it at a crossroads, or in running water.
The document also outlines alternatives and advanced versions of the spell, which could be read here. It also answers questions that I, a mere muggle, am unable to answer.
Hey, desperate times call for magical measures.

And bind, too,
All those who enable his wickedness
And those whose mouths speak his poisonous lies
I beseech thee, spirits, bind all of them
As with chains of iron
Bind their malicious tongues
Strike down their towers of vanity

(37,428 posts)Dear Mort the Wart, ran one letter. Do please be careful from midnight to four hundred tomorrow. Love & Kisses, Simonwith horns and grin. In same mail Alvarez received one reading: Dear Pimplehead, If the Warden breaks his leg tomorrow night it will be your fault. Faithfully your conscience, Simonagain with horns and smile.
I don't wish harm on Trump, but his paranoia is going to be fed by this story. I think that he will be awake for it, and the knowledge that that many ladies with lady parts will be working in concert against his agenda will be an additional stressor. He already panics and fucks up; that's not going to get any better.
In the book, the Warden breaks his leg in a fall somewhere around the time predicted, presumably due to agitation.

(167 posts)These are hardly the only threads that get "all the responses" (and what other super popular binding spell threads are there?). Also, go to a wingnut forum and all their threads are jokes (and this isn't a joke to Wiccans or other pagans, it's their religion). You do realize that forums like FR have entire subforums dedicated to right wing Christians praying for Republicans? I couldn't care less what some racist, facist filth thinks of me or the threads I post in, what is going to happen, they take over the government? Too late.

(7,939 posts)15th-Century Washington DC The Trump administration is working hard to satisfy the voters who put them into power. In that spirit, Vice President Mike Pence is promising Americans he will establish the Department of Anti-Witchcraft (DAW). The handbook of the DAW will be the gold standard of anti-witchery, the 1490 classic the Malleus Maleficarum (The Hammer of Witches).
The Department of Anti-Witchcraft is yet another sign Mike Pence is large and in charge when it comes to his belief religious liberty is Americas number one domestic and foreign concern. The Vice President plans that DAW will protect vital Judeo-Christian interests wherever they are threatened.
Reports state that there were discussions inside the administration whether to publicly say that the DAW will protect vital US Judeo-Christian interests. However, President Trump stepped in and pointed out that Judeo-Christian interests are American ones.
The new federal department is planned to interface with all other federal law agencies (FBI, NSA, ATF, and ZZTop). The Director of DWA will be given powers to train all existing and future agents in the skills needed to combat the Devil and his lickspittles.
The Bible is true and the Devil is real, stated Vice President Pences assistant, Andrew Canard. What we really need to do is break the cycle where women are introduced to really hot and virile devils. Once that cycle is stopped, God willing, we will be able to ferret out and prosecute guilty witches who are spoiling our cows milk, and making male Republican politicians super-gay for penis and female Republicans uppity.
Proponents of the DAW point out that there will be a heavenly reward for doing the LORDs work as well as economic benefits in this world. Already there is a burgeoning cottage industry in the manufacture of ducking stools, a traditional Christian-medieval method of punishing witches as well as prostitutes. Duck Dynasty Inc. is reported to be secretly seeking to corner the market in the device designed to place a woman tied to a chair into an icy cold river via an innovative rocker arm (see illustration to the right).
Donald Trump is calling the proposed initiative bigly ingenious.

(2,531 posts)I was glad to gain the understanding from reading this thread that this is not intended to cause harm. I still don't understand the mentality that has taken over in the country that THIS kind of thing is what's perfectly normal and popular. In fact that was my main curiosity in reading this was to see if anyone at all expressed objection. I understand lots of people have left DU over the last few months, was it because of the reaction to the election? Remember how everyone warned Trump to accept the results of the election, whatever they may be? And how mad everyobe was when he said he would decide that after seeing all the information?
