(3,428 posts)Thanks for posting; I'm always interested in architecture of all kinds, especially innovative buildings. Although these buildings are considered ugly, I like that architects are trying new things

(47,602 posts)I was terribly disappointed.
As a former Chicagoan, I especially hate this one.

Couldn't be much tackier.

(53,410 posts)I find that if there are many glass building together it tends to look much more interesting. A little like we imagine futuristic SciFi landscapes might look like.
Of course I wouldn't want to move or demolish those wonderful old building but it they could be in different parts of the city it might work.
PatSeg
(47,602 posts)of the skyscraper and modern urban architecture. The Chicago fire provided many architects unprecedented opportunities to build modern and innovative structures. Some of the buildings are extraordinary and the Trump tower stands out like a sore thumb. It might work in a place like Dubai. It is just another egocentric Trump vanity venture.
I agree, it does have that SciFi look to it though.

(1,148 posts)Trump had to play it more conservative to please Chicago critics. It's one of the better designs of Trump buildings. It could have been a lot worse. The worst thing about it is that it has his name on it.
Glad the Harold Washington Public Library made the list.
PatSeg
(47,602 posts)bad as that Las Vegas one. In the right setting, it might work (minus the tacky TRUMP on it). The first time I saw a picture of it, I cringed. He is always trying to dominate everything in the neighborhood.
I checked out some of Adrian Smith's other buildings and many of them have that futuristic look about them.

(38,328 posts)The ugliest buildings in the world are all the various flavors of "McMansion."
My parents once owned a small farm surrounded by larger lemon orchards.
The lemon orchards were later sold, ripped out, and turned into mini-ranches with big ugly homes that appealed to wealthier people who worried more about property values than they'd enjoy any sort of creativity or good taste. My parents fled as soon after their new neighbors formed a homeowners association and started complaining all activities that resembled farming or creative art. God forbid you use chicken shit as fertilizer, keep a few battered old vehicles visible from the street, paint a mural on a wall, or have a lawn that doesn't look a chemically enhanced golf course.
My parents are both artists who had day jobs. My brother is an artist too and had painted murals on the house. I'm certain everything my parents did threatened these alien property values. My parents sold the place and retired.
Everything that was interesting about the place has been ripped out; the animal pens, the chicken coop, the gardens, trees I planted... The small three bedroom house and murals are gone, replaced by a 4000 square foot monstrosity. It's all ugly now, the entire area gone bland and boring and "affluent" with electric driveway gates and "upscale" Home Depot decor. It's no fucking wonder so many of their wives and children become alcoholics and drug addicts. It's a damned dull and oppressive community. Conformity may sometimes be lucrative but it kills.

(15,391 posts)You can find enough examples to knock several entries off this list, and it's all the fault of one man.
I'm talking about 81st street at the Lewis intersection in Tulsa, OK. There, on the north side, you'll find Oral Roberts University, and on the south side, Cityplex Towers, which started out as a hospital and medical research place started by Oral (in a city that has a surplus of hospital beds) and is now a sad 1970s style-looking, small unpopular hospital with the rest of the towers turned into office buildings.
I don't know if they've been improved since I last ventured into them, which in that time has seen Richard Roberts and his family relieved of any administration since they preferred to line their pockets with whatever money they could squeeze out of them, putting the bare minimum into any kind of upkeep. This has kept the places looking threadbare and rundown for years.

I think the average strip mall to be more hideous BY FAR than any of the buildings on this list.
At least the architects on this list TRIED.

(53,410 posts)A very interesting spatial treatment that looks almost the opposite of what the outside looks like. On the outside the building looks squeezed and trampled but on the inside it looks very airy and stretched high and wide. Sorry for the length of the link!

The Russian emb was just kind of all around ugly to me, especially for an island location.

(4,429 posts)I used to go to the Lindemann every once in awhile (I worked for the department of mental health) and no matter how many times I went, I could never find the door.
It is seriously the most awkward - and infuriating building...........Nothing about it makes sense, from the outside, but it's usefulness to skateboarders (and they weren't supposed to use the walkways, either .
Lucinda
(31,170 posts)I can see where the door issue would be a prob. It doesn't seem to have anything that screams "entrance here!"
It's really pretty bleak looking, and I can appreciate a nice modern design.
smirkymonkey
(63,221 posts)I live very close to there. It is apparently a mental health center, but I would think the design would drive people over the edge rather than soothe them. It is a horrible design. As is Boston city hall. I think both buildings should be razed and replaced.
Warren DeMontague
(80,708 posts)I have no problem with "weird" or out of the mold, but ugly slabs of concrete are soul-deadening.
But you see more of that with unimaginative, mass produced institutional architecture than you do with buildings that are trying to do something new or original imho.

(129,491 posts)I remember when they were building it and when it was done, because of the angle that I would see it while driving in to work, I called it the "Gumby Building".
It sits adjacent to Amtrak's 30th Street Station (and some of the Amtrak operations are in there). The outer window panes are highly reflective and there are also LEDs built into the exterior. A few years ago, they staged the "world's largest pong game" on the exterior!

It is definitely completely out of place! I can see why everyone calls it the Darth Vader building. In that vein the Death Star would fit too.
