(6,129 posts)In my experience. American "conservative Christians" are in fact rarely conservative OR Christian.
Oh, they all go to church on Sunday--in the South, where I was born, that is usually a social exercise rather than a spiritual act. Social intrigue, jealousy and meanness take precedence over spirituality, charity and benevolence. But like the old saying goes: going inside a church doesn't make you a Christian any more than going inside a garage makes you a car.

(14,861 posts)Are they followers of some other religion? Atheists? Something else?
I suspect most of the people you're talking about sincerely believe Jesus was the son of God, died and was resurrected, and forgives their sins. Their behavior leaves plenty to be desired, to be sure. Perhaps that makes them bad Christians, but it doesn't make them non-Christians.

(9,257 posts)I know of in political American life. Perhaps Obama too. But there are a few. VERY few. The rest are pretentious hypocrites and anything *but* "Christian" just IMO (and probably quite a few others).
Unfortunately, they earned their reputation, whether they like it or not.

(11,804 posts)gets close to the No True Scotsman fallacy. It's particularly problematic when someone behaving in what you (and I) might consider unchristian behavior states that they are doing what they are doing to live up to their Christian ideals.

But they do not follow the words of Christ.
Boy that makes my right wing evangelical relatives and in-laws mad, but I will not ever call them Christians again and I correct them (yeah, it's obnoxious) when they call themselves that.

(8,747 posts)They are obsessed about Atheism, Abortion, Feminism and LGBT people, and the Old Testament. They are Fundamentalists, and as such have a great deal in common with Fundamentalist Muslims and Jews. Despite the fact they will swear up and down, they have nothing in common and constantly rant about Sharia Law.
