The Supreme Court has upheld the individual mandate in Obamacare, paving the way for full implementation of the law in the states and ensuring that millions of uninsured Americans haves access to affordable coverage. The court upheld the provision as a tax. The Medicaid expansion is limited, but not invalidated, the court found. In short: the entire ACA is upheld, with the exception that the federal governments power to terminate states Medicaid funds is narrowly read. Roberts joined Sotomayor, Breyer, Ginsburg, and Kagan in the 5 to 4 decision. Kennedy sided with the conservatives.

Affordable Care Act upheld

Reminder:
<...>
- If you're employed, and insured, you'll probably lose the free preventative care services you've enjoyed since last year. Some 54 million people took advantage of the physical exams, cancer screenings, flu shots, child immunizations, etc. that the law provides for, with no co-pay.
- If you're a young adult and don't have coverage through school or work, you might still be on your parents' health insurance plan, thanks to the ACA. Say good-bye to that.
- If you're a parent with a child with a serious illness, your child could once again be denied coverage because of the illness. One of the first provisions of the Act outlawed denying coverage to children with pre-existing conditions. That'll be gone.
- If you're a senior and fall in the "donut hole," the coverage gap in which many seniors pay for their drugs out of pocket, get ready to start spending again, because the gap is going to open up again.

Sigh.

"I never thought I'd see Democrats celebrating the ascendancy of a Republican plan spawned by the Heritage Foundation, but wonders never cease. "
...I never thought "I'd see Democrats celebrating" the possibility of returning to the status quo (no expansion of Medicaid, no ban on dropping people with a pre-existing condition, no free preventive care for seniors, no improved MLR, etc.).

(32,017 posts)I do not share it. And you and I both know that I am not a supporter of the status quo, but, sometimes, the medicine is worse than the disease, and I think the ACA is one of those cases. I think it enriches and strengthens the very cause of the problem--the health insurance industry.
I hope the future proves me wrong.

(116,464 posts)"I know. I admire your fastidious devotion to the President. I do not share it."
...your opinion of my "devotion to the President," has an impact on the 16 million who will receive Medicaid, those who will no longer be dropped by insurance companies and the benefits to seniors and young people?
I'm talking about the facts of health care, not about "devotion to the President."

But thanks for masquerading as a good teabagger and wishing death on me and millions like me.

(82,383 posts)What is wrong with strengthening the health care industry? What interests is it of anyone for it to be weak? So what if insurance companies make money (less, since there are caps). People will get health care. I'd rather people get health care (and a better means to pay for it) that indulge in the alleged tears of insurance companies (who would have been happy if that failed.)
