As someone who has worked with people with personality disorders and who has a relative with BPD I find it extremely offensive and disgusting the way people on this site keep stigmatizing people with personality disorders. So, here are some facts...
Almost 6% of people have Borderline Personality Disorder. This disorder is most often caused by the person who has it being severely traumatized as a child. This can be sexual or physical abuse, severe neglect, abandonment, etc. This is also a very common in people who have endured serious trauma surrounding gender identity issues where they do not have adequate support.
Every time one of you on this site claims that personality disorders are not really mental illnesses you are implying that these illnesses are just defects in character because the person is bad or did something wrong.
So STOP trying to claim that pointing out that Trump has a mental illness in some way stigmatizes people who have mental illnesses while you turn right around and stigmatize others. People can be BOTH evil and bad while also having a mental illness. It happens all the time with sex offenders and serial killers.
Stop stigmatizing victims and survivors or trauma and abuse who have personality disorders. Those are mental illnesses, period. Disorders ARE illnesses. Mental disorder = Mental illness...same damn thing.
That. is. all

(9,124 posts)cost him the popular vote, Ted Cruz's father was involved in JFK assassination, China invented climate change hoax, the crime rate is the highest for 50 years. He sees everything through a distorted lens that has little to do with reality. He's had opportunity and wealth most can only dream of but he feels persecuted. Yes, he is mentally ill. No, we shouldn't generally single the mental ill out and talk about them openly, but this is a guy who has the nuclear codes, who has the power to start World War 3. This has got nothing to do with anyone else who has a mental illness.

(2,056 posts)I started this thread because some people are trying to get people to stop stating that Trump has a mental illness because they think it stigmatizes people with mental illness. However, in doing so those same people are claiming that personality disorders are not really a mental illness, which is false.
What I'm saying is...Yes, Trump is mentally ill and it's OK to say so. We MUST say so because it's actually grounds to remove him from office. At the same time...it is NOT the mental illness that makes him a terrible person...it's that he has never been held accountable in his life so he is also diabolical with no conscience so he is a crook as well. It's those other things that make him bad.
In the process of trying to no stigmatize people with mental illness there was some stigmatizing of people who have mental illnesses most often due to being traumatized as a child and that's just not OK.
