I still think they will lose. I also believe Mitch McConnell was in on all of it to ensure a conservative Supreme Court for years to come.

I've noticed people working hard to sew hopelessness. The fact is, which has been reported on, is that there is growing concern within the GOP that they may be in trouble in 2018. It will take quality candidates, loads of money and a lot of work but it is doable. The defeatist stuff is just noise. it's either people we don't want in our foxhole anyway, or at worst, those working for more nefarious purposes. Either way, to hell with those folks.

I'm expecting big things. I thought people would dislike Trump but I never anticipated the level of activism that has occurred. It's been incredible. They key now is directing it.

You're absolutely right: we should crush the GOP in the midterms. Even with the horrible map on the Senate side, retaking that house is not outside the realm of possibility. HOWEVER, it still won't happen if we get complacent. The republicans aren't going to hold back from their bag of dirty tricks, that's for sure.

7. Not If The DNC, DCCC & The Senate Counterpart

Don't get off their backsides and start engaging. Rachel just did a piece on how Price's seat is open for a special election as well as a couple of others and the Dems are yawning saying they are Republicon seats in 'safe' districts. So we give up before even trying? She also pointed out that 45 only won Price's district by 1 1/2%.

From Maddow. The DNC has to quit ceding seats to the republicans! Often times uncontested seats. We don't win win when we don't even try! It's maddening.

is maintaining their seats. Repukes will say and do anything if it means they can keep their cushy jobs while screwing the populace. Although it may be taken out of their hands if SS and Medicare are on the table due to the irresponsible executive branch.

14. Probably not, really

Gerrymandering has made it such that it will take a nearly 15% movement in the popular vote for Democrats to take control of the House. This would mean that the Democrats would need nearly 60% of the popular vote versus the Republicans slightly more than 40% for the Dems to take a slight majority. Effectively, as it currently stands, each two Republican popular votes are worth nearly three Democrat votes.

The big goal for Democrats now should be to organise at the grass roots level, and work to take back the state and local level seats. EVERY seat should be contested - the Republicans should have no more gimmes. This will be necessary if Dems are to have any hope of a voice in the next redistricting. Everything from Senator to dog catcher must be contested.

15. Probably not in the Senate, where the map is against us

I hope no one will accuse me of being defeatist if I point out some relevant facts. We are, after all, the reality-based community.

The Democrats (i.e., members of the Democratic Caucus, including King and Sanders) are defending 25 seats, to only 8 for the GOP. Furthermore, most of the Republican seats are in safely red states. Only Dean Heller of Nevada is an incumbent Republican up for re-election in a state Clinton carried, and she carried that one narrowly. Arizona was a narrow Trump win so Jeff Flake might be vulnerable. Beyond that, it's hard to be optimistic about flipping a seat in Utah, Wyoming, Nebraska, Texas, Tennessee, or Mississippi.

On the other hand, there are several vulnerable Democrats, including those in red states like Montana, North Dakota, Missouri, Indiana, and West Virginia -- in 2008, Obama took Indiana, but otherwise those states have been voting Republican since 2000. Then we have the Democrats in swing states, or even states traditionally thought of as blue, but which Trump carried this time: Wisconsin, Michigan, Ohio, Pennsylvania, and Florida. I'm not saying those ten Democrats are all doomed, but the odds are that at least a few of them will lose.

The assumption that Trump will be very unpopular on Election Day isn't airtight. That's a long time away. Moreover, there will be local factors in all these races. Still, it would take a real tidal wave for the Democrats to score a net gain of three seats, which is what they'll need for a Senate majority.

Gallup has Trump above 50%, still, among white voters. As long as that holds it favours Congressional Republicans, with the way districts are gerrymandered and the gutting of the Voting Rights Act.
