Many progressives are posting on our congressman's page protesting his Facebook page meeting instead of meeting his constituents face to face. The Republicans are calling us whiners, babies, complainers, and of course, that Soros is paying us. They are flummoxed - they can't wrap their heads around it. "He - edited to add Congressman Tom Garrett - won by a landslide!" (True, he did, but of course, we're gerrymandered).
Keep demanding, keep asking, keep resisting. It's working.

(4,558 posts)While they did maintain majority in both chambers, they Republicans actually lost 2 seats in the Senate, and lost 6 seats in the House.
When you consider that the last 8 years saw a Democratic Party President, and consider that not since FDR has the Democratic Party held that office for more than 2 consecutive terms, and Reagan/Bush Sr. Has been the ONLY republicans to break that trend in the same timeframe, this should have been an EASY year for them.
That they lost seats in both chambers, and only won the Presidency by electoral college with a huge loss in popular vote after an 8 year Democratic Party President in office.. not really something to be proud of imo.

(10,252 posts)Same for me. I'm in a rural district in Texas, where Trump, Cruz, Cornyn, and anyone with an "R" by their name wins by a landslide.

(2,037 posts)I lived in Colleyville, TX, for part of the Bush regime. We Democrats used to meet in a small room with glazed windows in the local activity center. It was as much a support group as a political meeting, you might say.

(5,730 posts)It was politically necessary at the time to get the rural areas to agree. Both are so outdated and contrary to the spirit of the Constitution.

(2,198 posts)We have got to stick it to the gerrymanders as best we can.
phylny
(8,386 posts)until the gerrymandering is solved. Tom Perriello did win years ago against Virgil Goode, so it's possible. I will probably always be "represented" by a Republican, but perhaps Charlottesville and Danville can break free.

(205,949 posts)Kirsten Gillibrand won here in 2006, as did her successor. Now we're stuck with a Paul Ryan clone who is finally upsetting voters because nobody knows where she is or what she's doing until after the fact...

And on January 21, I'm sure someone who is very rich paid almost 5 million people to show their (feigned) disgust. And with signs!

(58,785 posts)When their faith in their leaders breaks, when they see Trump as a loser and themselves as losers for choosing him, their heads really will be exploding. We can't expect shame for their positions from most, only doubt from a few. But a relative few falling away is what we need.
So, obviously some good stuff is happening there, and thanks for the report from your area.

Soros throws $10 mil at election time. Unlike the GOP, we don't have time or
deep pockets to pay everyone to skew the dialogue.
And if they're complaining about it, you can bet they're doing it. Projection again!

(8,386 posts)On Garrett's page, Republicans are whining because evidently this type of backlash and protest has never happened in the history of the world. It took me two seconds to search for images of protests against Obama and a Youtube video of a raucous town hall meeting in our county with the last Democrat to hold office in this district.
I can only shake my head in wonder.

(34,475 posts)See your map and it's outrageous. Is there still a court case challenging the VA gerrymandering on racial grounds? Although Dems receive more votes statewide than do Repubs, 7 out of 11 districts are Repub (used to be 8 out of 11).

(6,535 posts)The only way they stay in power is by gaming the system (aka: cheating). Gerrymandering, voter suppression, intimidation of minorities.
Sure, there are plenty of places where everyone votes Republican...but they are the minority, if you look at the bigger picture, and we cannot let them forget it. Moreover, their white nationalist/Xtian-fundamentalist agenda is rejected by the vast majority of U.S. citizens, whether they vote or not.
People clearly became too complacent under Obama's presidency, but this current clusterfuck is waking people up. Standing up for human rights is not "whining;" they're damn right we're complaining though, which is the right thing to do when there's something seriously wrong.
They can't wrap their heads around it because they mistakenly believe that all white people agree with them, and that people of color can be coerced into accepting disenfranchisement--they want to go back to the overtly racist policies of the mid-twentieth century, as if the whole civil rights movement never happened. Thing is, it did happen, and at the end of the day the people will stand up and fight for what's right.
