Trump's ICE agents start rounding up parents of American children in multiple deportation raids

How cold do their hearts have to be to do this?

Trump's ICE agents start rounding up parents of American children in multiple deportation raids

Donald Trump's Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agents began massive deportation sweeps Thursday in Los Angeles and other cities around the country, only there's no indication that agents specifically targeted dangerous criminals. In the LA raids, Esther Yu Hsi Lee reports:

Advocates and lawyers said that ICE Enforcement and Removal Operations agents detained 134 immigrants at their workplaces and homes in a series of raids. They said that some people were picked up as “collateral arrest” after they opened their doors to agents who were not there to specifically arrest them. ICE agents allegedly requested to see identification from everyone and took in family members who were undocumented. (emphasis added)

The immigration sweeps are believed to have taken place across Southern California in Santa Paula, Oxnard, Van Nuys, San Bernardino, and Downey.

ICE agents denied detaining 100 people and a spokesperson insisted the raids targeted "individuals who pose a risk to our communities." Kind of like apprehending Guadalupe Garcia de Rayos in Arizona Wednesday, a mom with American children whose only crime was getting caught in a workplace raid about a decade ago.

Or these sweeps in Austin, Texas: “Alvarado described her husband’s arrest like ‘he was being hunted. … She said they knew where he lived, his job, his morning route.’”

“What do I do now?” Reyna Alvarado said in Spanish. "I had to go to school and tell my daughter that they’ve taken her father away,” she added, while her forlorn 12-year-old, the youngest of the Honduran couple's three children clutched her mother as she spoke.

There’s also unconfirmed reports that ICE agents are trailing kids walking home from school to lead them to their parents.

7. Councilman: ICE conducting 'actions' in Austin
Fri Feb 10, 2017, 07:17 PM
Feb 2017
AUSTIN - Austin City Councilman Gregorio Casar said Friday that his office has confirmed “a large amount of Immigration and Customs Enforcement actions in Austin in the last 24 hours, particularly in the North Lamar and Rundberg area.”

The message came from Casar on his Facebook page and was later tweeted out from his official account as well. Casar said the raids came because he believes, “ICE is out in public arresting people in order to retaliate against our community for standing up for our values against people like Abbott and Trump.”

There have been repeated rumors that ICE was planning actions in the area for several days. Last week, Austin lawyers said ICE officials would only be looking for anyone with an outstanding order of deportation or a warrant for arrest.

ICE has declined to discuss any possible actions that could be coming in the Austin area, but gave the following statement to KVUE's Michael Perchick:

Casar called the action by ICE overnight, “beyond reprehensible” and that the raids “instill fear in the community, and they make everyday people fear for their lives.”

“Trump and his allies will do everything they can to divide Americans, invoke fear in vulnerable neighborhoods, and demonize an entire community of people,” Casar wrote on Facebook.

This is being circulated around the city.

Minutes after you posted this.

But, the more exposure the better.

The Latino community is surely enraged, as are the rest of decent people everywhere.

mindlessly punitive, so in part this has to be a reaction to both the appellate court decision and California's flouting of his power.

That said, right now I blame mostly 45* and all who cheer this, including whoever working at public schools are providing ICE information! Of course ICE agents themselves will know where some people live and work and will follow children home. (Bastard school staffers!--hope their colleagues know who they are.) Some of ICE's work is extremely necessary, and yes perhaps some should resign rather than be part of this. Early, before things like deaths in holding camps begin.

But people with a job to do, do it, and competent people do it competently. When we were in Baja during a period of revolutionary unrest, the Mexican army stopped us and strolled away with and chatted up our children for more information on why my IDIOT husband had a spent rifle shell in our truck. We did not resent them for doing the obvious and, because they were competent men, they eventually let us continue on to blow money in our fishing village destination.

Perhaps I should not be drawing a parallel between army units required to keep the peace and ICE agents taking away undocumented workers, but let's see how individual ICE agents react when and if their actions start producing very grim and undeliable results.

* Calling 45 "45" because MLK's daughter advised never, ever using his actual name.

10. Austin teachers hand out flyer: What to do if ICE comes to your door
Fri Feb 10, 2017, 07:23 PM
Feb 2017

Educators in the Austin school district are providing information to students on what to do if immigration enforcement officials show up at their home or try to question them.

The labor group Education Austin provided its 3,000 members with various documents, including United We Dream flyers that detail “what to do if ICE comes to your door” — referring to the U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement — to hand out to students. Leaders of the group say they provided the information after hearing from teachers and parent support specialists who said they were fielding questions from students and families regarding their rights.

Rumors have swirled on social media for more than a week of some sort of ICE crackdown in the Austin area.

At least some students received the flyers this week at the International High School in East Austin, but it’s unclear how many teachers gave out the flyers, or whether they were provided during school hours.

Not meaning to exploit the children but any parent who sees this should be outraged.
