As Mike Pence gets used to his new role as vice president, Gov. Eric Holcomb and other Indiana Republicans are busy unraveling his legacy.
Holcomb also pardoned Keith Cooper, who was wrongfully convicted of robbery nearly 20 years ago, and declared a disaster emergency for an East Chicago neighborhood where residents have been forced to relocate because of lead contamination.
Pence had declined to pardon Cooper before leaving office, insisting that he exhaust his legal options despite resounding evidence of his innocence. Pence's refusal to exonerate the 49-year-old Chicago man came despite a pardon recommendation from the Indiana Parole Board and an online petition urging Pence to clear Cooper's name that had collected more than 100,000 signatures.
Pence also had rejected a request for a state disaster emergency declaration from the city of East Chicago in December. His office said at the time a declaration wasnt needed because federal and state agencies were already addressing the situation.
Holcomb's decision to change directions on those issues are the latest indication that his approach to governing may be more pragmatic and less ideological than that of his predecessor.

(11,802 posts)Pence was just horrible for us. Economically speaking, not nearly as bad as some GOP governors, but on social issues just as bad.

(14,274 posts)He is going to end up President when the GOP finally realizes they have to dump Drump to save themselves.
He is one sick bastard.
But I have more faith in Trump pulling a Palin and quitting than I do in the GOP impeaching this hack.

He wouldn't be able to hold his daughter hostage anymore. Putin would leak the videos. And Arnold is the new Celebrity Apprentice.
He will not go gentle into that good night.

But... there's a lot of bad stuff working its way through the legislature. On the environment front these include reducing regulations on CAFOs, a $150/year fee on electric vehicles and a bill to end net metering, a disaster for solar. Holcombe backs at least some of this (e.g. the $150 EV fee).

(8,003 posts)Indiana was once known for some reasonable moderate Republicans. This is the man who would be president if Trump were impeached. A lot of that stuff flies under the radar for folks and many did not know what he was doing because he was at least smart enough to keep his mouth shut. He wanted to start a propaganda arm in the state at one time for God's sake. This is such good news for Indiana, where I was born and lived most of my life (until I was able to escape after retirement).
