Gerrymandering reform gaining grassroots momentum

by Bill White at the morning call

Well, there's nothing riding on this except, uh, democracy, government accountability and the ability of people to choose their elected representatives instead of the other way around.

I wrote three columns about this last year, headlined "Gerrymandering is real source of election fraud," "Voters must regain control of election outcomes" and "Pennsylvania gerrymandering is bipartisan." In fact, I've been writing about it since 1994, so it's an issue I've felt strongly about for a long time. Pennsylvania is considered a national model for those who like the idea of protecting incumbent congressmen and state legislators from anything resembling accountability to voters.

But I've never felt so strongly that there's a chance of actually doing something about it until I saw the crowds who turned out in a much smaller venue in Bethlehem last August and then Friday night in Allentown. In both cases, they heard excellent presentations laying out the terrible scope of this problem and how it can be solved. Similar gatherings in Philadelphia and elsewhere also have drawn big crowds.

Bob Warner, spokesman for Pennsylvania Common Cause, told me this week, "The grassroots support never has been stronger."

To me this along with getting rid of voter purges and hack-able electronic voting machines are key to reviving our failing Republic.

Gerrymandering is one of the reasons for the big difference between the popular vote and the electoral college vote. One thing that is overlooked about gerrymandering is that it not only affects the national vote, it also affects the state and local votes, too That is why so many Republicans are gaining in State and local offices.

It has happened to us, we got moved to a strong Democratic district which didn't need any more Democratic votes. We were better off in the old district where our vote could make a difference. And worse, our representatives live on the other side of town and could care less what happens out here where we live.
