Damn that's a lot of water.
Stay safe Northern Florida DUers
I see Rick Scott finally declared a state of emergency - fugging hypocrite.

(103,856 posts)Florida (and all swampy places) were "designed" by nature to accommodate large deluges.. Humans try to change it, but when it REALLY rains, there is no pathway for the water to percolate down into the aquifers and underground river system that used to be where sinkholes now reign
That said, I hope that people get themselves, pets & important papers out of harm's way.

(8,224 posts)In one part it describes how Florida used to flood when it rained like this, long before all the asphalt and concrete. Getting Florida to stop flooding was a huge effort undertaken by the US Army Corps of Engineers right up to the late 1960s when the National Environmenal Policy Act was passed and people started looking at the impacts of doing so.
Give us 20" of rain and it still floods

(8,224 posts)There are a few parts of the state that were hit pretty hard, at least in rain volume. So in theory, emergency declarations for certain counties are warranted. Many areas of the state were quite dry and simply got some badly needed rain.
Scott declared a statewide emergency.
Section 252.363 F.S. provides an automatic extension of all active regulatory permits (development permits and such) for the duration of the state of emergency +90 days. The last one, he let run for 7 months, long after the fires which caused the declaration were all put out.
We will see, but my guess is that this one will run until the end of Hurricane season, in November.

(8,224 posts)I was copied in on their work to refine the final order. The final order may pare the declaration back to specific counties with specific issues. So far, I have nothing significant going on in the 4 counties I cover.
I have no problem with FEMA money and have worked with local gov'ts pulling together and authorizing projects that qualify. Debby is pretty much in the past here and water levels are just coming up to normal after a very dry spring. Another dose or two, and things will get newsworthy.
