It's all on them
When things go wrong as they sometimes will
when bad things are happening and it all seems up hill
its probably the GOP's fault

(18,402 posts)When we blew up the filibuster with regard to all nominees besides judicial, we gave away the keys to the store on this issue. I'm not saying we had a choice, because the Republicans would have blocked every Obama nominee for 8 years. But the consequences are coming back to haunt. We can't block any nominee without a fair number of Republicans coming to our side. And that's not going to happen. Or at least for more than, say one of these nominees (in that regard, we need to choose our battles wisely). Surrender Dorothy.
That is why we are over such a barrel with the Supreme Court nomination. The Republicans have said they're ready to blow up the rest of the nominating process by going nuclear on the filibuster for SCOTUS. Do we want that? I say no. We are screwed, and we might as well recognize it and hope they just implode at some point down the road.
ON EDIT: I'm not saying here that suspending the rules wasn't a huge breach of protocol and undemocratic power grab. It shouldn't have happened. It's wrong wrong wrong. I'm just saying we were going to lose these nomination fights eventually anyway. Our only power was to stall.

(18,402 posts)We can only make symbolic gestures now against a nominee while the Republicans hold the majority on committees and in the full Senate. It doesn't matter if every single Democrat holds strong by voting no. The nomination will go through. Apparently it doesn't even matter now if we don't show up for a quorum.

(21,754 posts)We have no more "representative" government unless you are Republican.
Can we even keep a semblance of unity for the next two years?
Even after two years, will the election process be just a sham so we can keep pretending to the world that we are a democracy?
Sadly, we have dug our own grave and are about ready to lie down in it.
Once again we have killed the patient in order to save her. It's the "American way"
What will it take to "take our country back"? And do we ultimately have it in us?
Trump and the GOP are betting we don't.

(55,894 posts)Per Rule V, suspension of the rules would have required a 1 day, advanced notice in writing. I don't recall seeing anything about this being done. Was the suspension of the Rules, then, not done legally?

given a day's notice, and therefore this vote is null and void?
