White House Press Secretary Sean Spicer on Tuesday insisted that Democrats had a responsibility to confirm any qualified Supreme Court nominee even though Senate Republicans had refused to hold hearings for President Barack Obamas nominee.
The default is if you are generally qualified and not extreme you are confirmed, Spicer told reporters ahead of the Tuesday night announcement of President Donald Trumps Supreme Court nominee.
One reporter pointed out that Republicans had not followed that standard after Obama nominated Judge Merrick Garland.
Theres never been a situation in which you had a fourth term, someone that late in an election cycle, Spicer opined. That had never occurred before. And I think the Senate Republicans were very clear that we should wait and let the voters have a choice. And thats exactly what happened.
In fact, Obama nominated Garland in the fourth year of his second term, 10 months prior to the election.

Nevermind actual history.........
"14 presidents have appointed 21 justices during presidential election years. A half-dozen presidents, classic lame ducks, filled Supreme Court seats even though their successors had been elected."

(54,437 posts)This third-rate Göbbels must think he can make up his "alternate history" as he goes along, and no one will notice. He was obviously wrong about a "fourth term," and probably just outright lying (I can't believe he misspoke out of ignorance) about "There's never been a situation" where a president nominated (and got confirmed) a Supreme Court Justice in his last year in office. Of course there has, and the last two presidents to successfully nominate a SCOTUS member in their last year in office were Republicans (Taft and Hoover).
