The Political Thought of Stephen K. Bannon

The Political Thought of Stephen K. Bannon

Every anxious citizen on this currently deranged planet of ours should feel a keen interest in penetrating the hyper-active political brain of Steve Bannon, who has been appointed as “senior strategist” by President-elect Donald Trump. Up until the point when he joined the Trump campaign, Bannon was a manically voluble communicator. He gave thundering lectures to right-wing groups.[1] He made films celebrating conservative icons from Reagan to Sarah Palin; there are reports that as a film-maker, Bannon modeled himself on Leni Riefenstahl.[2] He even collaborated on the script for a rap version of Coriolanus, “drawn to Shakespeare’s Roman plays,” according to the woman with whom he co-authored the script, “because of their heroic military violence.”[3] Then Bannon closed up like a clam. Presumably, the time for words had ended; the time for deeds had begun. Bannon is on record as welcoming darkness and destruction.[4] And in Trump, Bannon seems to have found the suitable political instrument of the darkness and destruction for which he yearns.

2. Bannon: Studied Propaganda to Sway Masses Darkness is good affinity for Nazi propaganda

A veteran of the Cold War and of Wall Street who believes America’s military should be strong and its capitalism more tender; and a Harvard-educated agitator comfortable in the backrooms of the elite, who has studied propaganda to achieve his goal of swaying the masses.

Bannon has cultivated an archvillain image, recently declaring, “Darkness is good,” and praising Dick Cheney, Darth Vader and Satan as emblems of power. (One “Saturday Night Live” actor played Bannon by wearing a Grim Reaper costume.) Bannon’s remarks succeeded in further enraging his liberal critics, who see him as the master enabler of a demagogue.

In the past, Bannon has repeatedly expressed his affinity for the technique of Nazi propaganda filmmaker Leni Riefenstahl, whose work in the 1930s glamorized the rise of Adolf Hitler. “One time we were in the office, and he said, ‘I want to be the Leni Riefenstahl of George Bush,’ and I was horrified,’” Jones said. (Jones said Bannon later amended his remark to say he wanted to be the Riefenstahl of the GOP.)

“We shared an interest in ‘The Private Life of Chairman Mao’ by Dr. Li Zhisui,” Pollak said in an email. “The most recent book I discussed with him was Snyder's new history of the Holocaust, ‘Black Earth,’ which argues that the Soviet destruction of its Eastern European neighbors eventually facilitated Hitler's Final Solution by creating a stateless, amoral environment.”

You could do a 'Venn diagram' of Dugin's influence, the dominionism of Mike Pence and the eliminationist rhetoric of the American rightwing. The stated goal is the destruction of all modern liberalism - I mean everything since the 19th Century!

Quoting from the Guardian article:

The purpose of operations like the hacking of the US election has been to destabilise the Atlantic order generally, and America specifically. And on this great struggle, Dugin is positively millenarian: “We must create strategic alliances to overthrow the present order of things, of which the core could be described as human rights, anti-hierarchy, and political correctness – everything that is the face of the Beast, the anti-Christ.”
