CNN host slaps down Congressman who cites American killers as justification for Muslim ban

“Congressman, can you point to a single terrorist attack in this country that was carried out by a Syrian refugee?” CNN’s Poppy Harlow said.

“I think you could look at DHS records and see that refugees in general have often been the cloak under which terrorists do move from country to country,” U.S. Rep. Jack Kingston (R-GA). “And we do not know who’s coming in to our country.”

Harlow doubled down, “But Congressman, I asked if you could point to an event that you feel justifies this ban, that has endangered or killed American people.”

“Poppy, let me point to it, Ft. Hood, Orlando, San Bernardino, and terror attacks around the world,” he said...

“Congressman, you’re talking about American citizens,” Harlow said. “I want to correct this for our viewers.”

The Ft. Hood shooter, she said, Nadal Hassan, was born in Arlington, Virginia. The San Bernardino shooter was born in Illinois. Omar Mateen, the shooter in Orlando’s Pulse nightclub massacre was born in New York.

“How is that justification?” she said.

The constant pretending that this didn't happen or he didn't exist could have something to do with the color of his skin. He's a light skinned Puerto Rican and Iraq war veteran. People often try to deny that he's American.

and I do appreciate your little "not personal" caveat.

I'm a news junkie and never heard of this guy....I don't know that this was deliberately suppressed, there have been so many non-, religion based "random shootings, and they all seem to get a lot of publicity.

That being said, I firmly believe that the cause of most gun violence in the US is the LACK of gun safety laws -- Not Muslims, not a lack of mental health providers, but the open access to guns. It's appalling, and just one of the things we lost in the election, as Hillary promised to strengthen the gun laws.

and I was responding more to the post that said "the real terrorists ain't muslim". I am a gay person and Orlando happened. The thing about terrorism is some terrorist acts don't nullify other terrorist acts. Christian fundamentalists and others committing terrorist acts doesn't somehow render islamic terrorism not 'real', which the families of many deceased muslims will tell you as muslims are the main victims of islamic terrorism.

That miserable mouth-breather used to be a GOP Congressman from Georgia. Truly a CONgressman. He was one of four vermin running for Saxby Chambliss's seat after that goon decided to retire. I thoroughly enjoy reminding one and all that Saxby Chambliss was the ooze of runny shit who challenged triple-amputee Vietnam veteran Max Cleland (who gave three of his own limbs to that nightmare war, while that miserable chickenhawk Chambliss avoided serving) a few cycles back, and had the gall to question his patriotism because he was against the Iraq War. And horror of horrors, Chambliss won.

Jack Kingston did not win that Senate seat - a small comfort, at least. His bad behavior was not rewarded, thank God. Another CON got in - David Perdue.

I'm not sure why these talking head propagandist still suprise anybody with the audacious and blantant lies they peddle. Conservative media has been ensconcing bullshit as venerable truth for over 25 years now. These people and their supporters live in an alternate reality, complete with its own made up version of god, story of history, and present facts. As mentioned by a handful of astute folks on here, there is a shadowed hand at play. The institutionalization of centralized banking and the rise of the military industrial complex have been entrenching the global plutocracy for over 100 years. We are facing the endgame of those designs, folks, and the fascist global police state lies directly ahead on this path.

As mentioned elsewhere, research Alexander Dugin for a robust understanding of what is happening globally to the liberalism of western democracy. Dugin is the current master of puppets for the economic cabal that is suffocating our planet with poisonous air, water, earth, and rhetoric.

Definitely look up Dugin. Sadly, I don't see the end to Trump's outrageous policy directives stopping. This man has never apologized or admitted being wrong about anything, and he won't stop now that he's the most powerful man in the world. He, and the entire movement he represents, will have to be removed and barred from power. Trump is the blunt and bludgeoning weapon of a much larger hand that has it's fingers embedded throughout our society and families. The true horror of Trump is that tens of millions of our fellow countrymen support him, and will support him no matter what. Those people are prepared to violently resist any effort to remove him from power. The fire rises...

I live in Tennessee, and grew up in a fundamentalist home and environment. I personally know the type of people who truly believe in Trump and the entire alt-right/fascist/totalitarian/theocratic movement that his ascendant power represents in this country. They deny climate change science not because they have ever read any evidence, but because it's not described in the bible. They support nationalism because they believe the bible describes the appropriateness of tribal and hierarchical societies. I have been told both of things things (and many more dismaying and discouraging justifcations) repeatedly in conversation with members of my own family and their friends...and they are not alone...they are legion, my friend. These people will not be dissuaded. Their entire perception of reality is tied up in it. In a diplomatic world, there is no reason why secularists and zealots can't all have their own parcel. But our world's diplomacy is an illusion meant to set the world on fire. We are being directed to militarize against each other out of the perception that we're already attacking each other. And it is manifold across social, political, national, international, and religious lines.
