Donald Trumps Refugee Ban Has Attorney General Nominee Jeff Sessions' Fingerprints All Over It
For years, Senator Jeff Sessions and his top communications guru have been screaming and hollering about refugees. Looks like their new boss granted their wish.
To longtime Jeff Sessions observers, the chaos that unfolded in American airports on Saturday morning wasnt a surprise. At all.
Rather, the refugee ban was the predictable culmination of years of advocacy from two of President Donald Trumps most trusted advisors: White House Senior Advisor Stephen Miller and attorney general designate Jeff Sessions. For years, Sessions and Millerwho was the Alabama senators communications director before leaving to join the Trump campaignpushed research and talking points designed to make Americans afraid of refugees.
Press releases, email forwards, speeches on the Senate floorMiller and Sessions used it all to make the case against Obamas refugee program was a huge terror threat. The executive order Trump signed late in the day on Friday is just the logical conclusion of their work.
I started getting press releases that Miller sent on behalf of Jeff Sessions in March of 2013, shortly after I moved to D.C. to cover Congress. The emails went to my Gmail, and kept coming over the yearshundreds and hundreds of them. By the time he left Sessions office to join the Trump campaign, Millers press releases were legendary among Hill reporters: There were just so many of them, at all hours of the day, and they never stopped. Some were lengthy diatribes; some were detailed, homemade charts; some were one-liners; one was just a link to Facebooks stock page on Google Finance with the subject line, Does this mean Facebook has enough money now to hire Americans? ....

Stephen Miller
Miller grew up in a liberal-leaning Jewish family in Santa Monica, California.[2] Though his parents were Democrats, Miller became a conservative after reading National Rifle Association CEO Wayne LaPierre's Guns, Crime, and Freedom.[3] While attending Santa Monica High School, Miller began appearing on conservative talk radio.[3] In 2002, at the age of sixteen, Miller wrote a letter to the editor of The Santa Monica Evening Outlook, in which he stated that "Osama Bin Laden would feel very welcome at Santa Monica High School."[4]
In 2007,[5] Miller received his bachelor's degree from Duke University, majoring in political science.[3] Miller served as president of the Duke chapter of Students for Academic Freedom and wrote conservative columns for the school newspaper. Miller gained national attention for his defense of the lacrosse players in the Duke lacrosse case.[3][6] While attending Duke University, Miller accused the poet Maya Angelou of "racial paranoia" and described student organization MEChA as a "radical national Hispanic group that believes in racial superiority." ....
After graduating from college, Miller worked as a press secretary for Congresswoman Michele Bachmann and Congressman John Shadegg, both members of the Republican Party.[8] Miller started working for Alabama Senator Jeff Sessions in 2009,[8] rising to the position of communications director.[3] In the 113th Congress, Miller played a major role in defeating the Gang of Eight's proposed immigration reform bill.[3][8] Miller and Sessions developed what Miller describes as "nation-state populism," a response to globalization and immigration that would strongly influence Donald Trump's 2016 campaign.[3] Miller also worked on Dave Brat's successful 2014 House campaign, which unseated Republican Majority Leader Eric Cantor.[3] ....
Miller, along with Steve Bannon, is credited with writing Trump's inaugural address.[12] In the early days of the Trump administration, Miller continues to work with Jeff Sessions, the not-yet-confirmed candidate for Attorney General, and Steve Bannon, Trump's chief strategist, to enact policies restricting immigration and a rebuke on sanctuary cities.[13]
