(2,037 posts)They don't just provide a service (and a very important one at that); they're often at the forefront of so many of the reforms over the years which we now take for granted.
llmart
(15,540 posts)but I wouldn't get all sentimental about all of them.
I have worked with and know many, many good lawyers who fight the good fight every single day, sometimes doing hours of pro bono work for people and groups such as immigrants. I've also known of many who are just out to bilk people.
These two are admirable young people as are almost all of those with the ACLU.

(2,037 posts)Some unfortunately do make nefarious use of their skills; just ask vulture funds and the RNC (to name a few).

(869 posts)Trying to smooth talk the constitutionality of Trump's orders. Now we have an example of a rotten lawyer.... He had a bad smirk on his face too.... Wanted to punch him...
llmart
(15,540 posts)I used to want to wipe that smirk off of Dubya's face quite a bit and cheered heartily when the shoe was thrown at him. Now I just want to punch these types of people in the face. I'm not generally a violent person.

(10,495 posts)In Texas the ignorant fell for their lies about "frivolous lawsuits" and how doctors were leaving the state due to malpractice suits. They fell for groups funded by the U.S. Chamber of Commerce and the Kochs such as Citizens against lawsuit abuse. They promised lower malpractice insurance for doctors, yeah right, never happened!
Now with caps on damages (for the frivolous cases why would you need a cap), children, the elderly, unemployed and home-makers have trouble finding a malpractice attorney to represent them because without lost wages which are outside of the cap, the case is a losing proposition even if you get the maximum you can recover. Medical care has suffered as hospitals and doctors don't have to worry about paying for their mistakes
Trial lawyers work on a contingency fee, meaning we don't get paid unless our client's recover. Therefore we have a big incentive to only take cases we believe have merit. 98% of American judges responded to a poll that hey did not have a problem with frivolous lawsuits in their court. If they have one they dismiss it, case closed.
Kudos to these brave attorneys, I hope they do not run afoul of their state's advertising rules!!!
