Trump and America lose again: The Mexico blunder
Mexican President Enrique Peña Nieto on Thursday morning canceled his upcoming visit with President Trump amid outrage in Mexico about Trumps plan to build a border wall and his threats to force Mexico to pay for it.
Peña Nieto had sent out a recorded message on Wednesday night saying that he regrets and disapproves of the U.S. decision to move forward with the wall, but that he still planned to come to Washington next Tuesday to meet with Trump because of the importance of the negotiations.
But that decision changed after a Thursday morning tweet from Trump saying that if Mexico is not willing to pay for the wall, then it would be better for Peña Nieto to cancel the meeting.
If you wanted to know how governance by tweet would work out, the answer is not well. If this pattern keeps up needless provocation, backlash, insult the United States will find allies and trading partners scarce. Danielle Pletka from the American Enterprise Institute observes that while Trump might be reveling in his tough-guy routine, as someone who wrote The Art of the Deal might tell you, its better not to antagonize someone you are supposed to be negotiating with for no reason. She continued, My understanding of Donald Trump is that he believes his predecessors have done bad deals; well, that may be, but if he is going to make our relationship work with Mexico, and achieve the cooperation he wants to get money for a wall, and fewer Mexicans climbing over and under it, this is not an auspicious way to start. He surely has made his effort to renegotiate the North American Free Trade Agreement that much more difficult.
