(25,403 posts)1. My photo of Manzanar from October 2013
Ironically, the Manzanar National Historic Site was closed the day I was there in October 2013, because of the US Government shutdown. I got this shot from outside the fence, with the majestic Sierra Nevada range in the background.
So I drove on to Death Valley National Park. It was closed too, but I knew I could slip into some of my favorite photo spots at DV.
Kudos to the good people at the Death Valley National Park, and to Michael Ian Black, for speaking truth to irrational power.

(5,301 posts)5. I drive past Manzanar several times a year
going between L.A. and Reno.
The last time I did was in November. I half-jokingly said that I expected that any day they would be putting up a sign outside proclaiming "Under New Management."
I wouldn't be surprised to see it the next time, and they won't be joking.

Great photo -- it's heart-wrenching to think of all the suffering that went on in that valley.

So many people I know only want to talk about how great Social Security and Unions were and gloss right over the Japanese Internment.
