But Wayne, Valentino, and Ocenos research, conducted in June, found hostility toward women was a major factor, predicting support for Trump more strongly than authoritarian attitudes and about as well as racial prejudice.
. . .
Sexism and particularly anti-feminism isnt politically neutral. Many conservative women have come forward to say theyre horrified by Donald Trump, but sexism has been correlated with support for other Republican candidates as well. In studies of voters in 2008 and 2012, traditional beliefs about gender and hostility toward feminism were also linked to much lower support for Hillary Clinton.
Its the kind of sorting that people do to go into one party or the other, said Wayne, a PhD candidate in political science at the University of Michigan. Republicans tend to have attitudes that are more traditionalist, more old-fashioned, less likely to want the kinds of changes that feminism, for example, is pushing.
Wayne said she couldnt compare how sexist attitudes nationally had correlated with support for Republicans in previous elections, so she couldnt say if Trump made the situation better or worse. But Brian Schaffner, a political scientist at the University of Massachusetts Amherst, used the same survey as part of a poll in New Hampshire, and found that sexism was a much bigger factor in the 2016 election than it was in 2012:

(4,515 posts)I'm soon to be 55 and in my slightly younger days, I'd often hear women say things "Women make terrible bosses". "Why aren't you at home with your kids? They need their mother at home." Now I think many of them that think that way just don't say it out loud. My 44 year old brother in law works a light office job from home. My sister is a 43 year old CPA who comes home after a 12 hour day during tax season stressed out that hasn't gotten dinner ready yet. While he's been sitting on the couch for the past 3 hours. Not because he demands it, but because she sees it as her "role".
We have a very long way to go still.

When we were homeschooling them, I taught them how to use every tool that I had. They learned how to use many hand tools, as well as power woodworking tools.

(17,019 posts)I've met women who were extremely sexist. They are comfortable in their self-imposed box. Whatever dreams they may have had they have given up for the acceptance they get for towing the line. They are the first to explain why what they are doing is the only truly right thing to do. Women in non-traditional roles threaten that status quo and they are quick to attack. Comments about how she looks or her relationship status or her sexual orientation are the weapons of choice.
