General Discussion
Related: Editorials & Other Articles, Issue Forums, Alliance Forums, Region ForumsFriday is in the books. So is yesterday. Now what? What's next?
We had the inauguration of a monumentally unqualified man who has more pure power than almost all the forty four qualified men who have preceded him. THAT is frightening. That he defeated one of the most qualified persons who ever sought the office is angering. That she was a woman is depressing.
We have a cabinet that it appears will be more male, more rich, and more white than any in recent years.
Yesterday, eclipsing the inauguration, was a grass roots movement, grown organically among the country's only majority "minority" - women. They knitted their Pussy Hats, created their signs, and, accompanied by men who support them - the very definition of real men - and took to the nation's and the world's streets to send a message.
And so we find ourselves today.
I really don't know where this will go. If sustained, it can make a difference. Similar events led to Civil Rights action. It led to the end of a war and the premature ends of two presidencies. So we know it has the potential.
But then I look around at our still diminishing electoral standing. We are TRULY the minority party and, as far as can be seen, out of power and without a real voice.
My hope is that the young people I saw yesterday, in particular the young women who so forcefully and eloquently represented themselves and their ideals, will run for elected office. Any office. I sincerely hope there will be ZERO unopposed republicans, even in the reddest districts.
It takes strength and grit to run for office.
The people - the WOMEN - I observed yesterday give me hope.
The question we ALL need to be asking is "how can we help you win?"

(58,703 posts)if 10% of those at the marches actually start working to organize and get out the vote, I'd bet we could flip a few dozen districts in '18.
We need to tie the Repubs in Congress to Trump and to what is going on. Remind people that ending Obamacare/ACA is not Trump's great new idea. The Repubs in Congress have been trying to do that for 7 years. It's the House that matters now. I don't give a shit about the Dem presidential candidate until early 2019.

(61,701 posts)We have to stop voting against Democrats because they "aren't inspiring enough" and get the Democratic Party back in power in Congress and state legislatures. This is where laws get passed.

Every day until she is tossed to the curb.
And yes, I do agree that his statements about the Democratic party did not belong in that speech. But we can take that up with him after we have finished fighting with the Republicans.

Sorry, I really don't know.

I'll see if I can find it for you, but the gist of it was this:
First, call your congress people EVERY DAY. Wake up, brush your teeth, walk the dog, make the coffee, call your congress people. The current issue we should be calling them about is Betsy DeVos because all of public education is at risk. But we know there will be an issue every day, and we need to be their new best friends.
Second, join everything that supports what you support: Planned parenthood, ACLU, Sierra Club, whatever. And subscribe to the print publications that are reporting responsibly.
Third: run for something. Or help someone run for something.
He talked about how the Democratic party has failed us. I disagree, but as I say, I'll take that up with him when we have time.
