http://www.cracked.com/blog/how-not-to-respond-to-regretful-trump-voters-guide/If they're stepping up and have the integrity to admit regret, that's a good thing. It's a step out of the circle they were in and toward the general direction of yours. If the only response they get is dickheads spewing bile at them, they are going to back out of the room and find safety where they came from, among the group that elected Trump in the first place.
Lesson 1:
If you are not nice to them, they will go back to the political environment where screaming "Let Him Die" and "Lock Her Up" is considered normal.
But you do have to recognize that if you don't at least acknowledge their regret as a step toward positive change, you are perpetuating the problem.
Lesson 2:
If they keep voting republican, it's your fault, not theirs.
When we ask him to not take away our insurance or to not defund Planned Parenthood, we're not asking him to keep those services for liberals. We're asking to keep those services for everyone. If we're preaching basic human empathy, we don't get the luxury of deciding who does and doesn't receive it.
Lesson 3:
Tolerate intolerance and be nice to people who have no empathy for you. Otherwise YOU are the bad guy.
See, it's super easy to make fun of people who didn't know that Obamacare and the ACA are the same goddamn thing. It's easy to rag on the people who said, "I didn't think he'd actually go through with repealing it." But talking to these people and educating them when they show regret actually changes something for the better. That's what we want, right? To fix this? To prevent it from happening again in the future? The election is over. He's the president. Let's get to work. Let's start making sure voters know what the hell they're getting into for the next election; not slamming the door in their faces and calling them scumbag pigfuckers.
Lesson 4:
People who don't even know that Obamacare and the ACA are the same thing can be convinced with documented facts and well-reasoned arguments.
People who cherry-pick what to believe and what not to believe will all of a sudden forget their prejudices and indoctrination and start believing you, because this time you are serious about being believed.
OK, now you're just being a dick.
Lesson 5:
Do not be a dick to people who didn't realize that a lying, conning, racist, self-obsessed, obscene, pussy-grabbing bully would make a bad President.

One one hand, they deserve to be treated like assholes, and it would be help to squelch our internal anger...
But, now is the time to take these people and lead them with love-bombing and attention to get them to relax their defensive guard against the Democratic Party and Liberal idealogy. This is perhaps the best opportunity we have to increase the rank-in-file of the Democratic Party.
At worst, nothing can come of this for some.
At moderate, they can become left-leaning or open Independents who can entertain Democrats in the polling booth.
So while I say that retribution is a self-satisfying tactic--it is short lived and further alienates people.
We should embrace them, offer any and all of our support, while introducing them to the realities of Liberalism.
This is a Golden Opportunity to attract converts.

(9,128 posts)I would not be surprised if Donnie's health breaks down sometime in the next couple of years, and that whoever we nominate will be facing an incumbent President Pence.
BTW I dearly hope that somebody in the DNC is working on an opposition research dossier on Mike Pence. They may well need it by 2020. Pence is no Spiro Agnew, and I suspect he'll remain clean enough to stay in place as Vice President.

I asked one person who says she regrets voting for him, "What are you going to do to get hiim out of office or to get the Republicans who are enabling him out of office? That will take away a lot of his power to do damage." She looked at me as if i were crazy and said "But, I'm a Republican."

I tell them they helped make this mess, they need to help clean it up.
I'm willing to let bygones be bygones if they adcept they fucked up and look towards how to fix it.

(58,704 posts)FTR, I'm not about to get all cuddly with Trump turners. I'm not going to go all New Age candles and scented oil on people who've been attacking me for months upon months, and I'm not going to buy some birther's idea of 'be reasonable, do it my way.'
However, if people really do wish to stop supporting Trump, I'll allow it. Fine. One important thing I'll add on for them, Trump really didn't do much yet, though what he has done is pretty evil. No, the real problem is the Repub Congress. Show me some remorse about rubber stamping your vote to keep sending those cretins back to Washington cycle after cycle.
"Tough love" does not demand that I get a counter-slap to the face or knee to the groin. It does demand some admission of having been part of the problem and some indication of actual desire to fix something.
Want to convince me? Don't just whine about dumping Trump, dump the fucking assholes who plowed the fields he grew up in. Dump Repubs. All of them.
Here is why.
These people tend to be upset that he will affect THEIR lives.
They don't care at all that it will harm others, the only regret they have is that it might not be good for them personally.
Them being upset that his policies and those he eagerly signs for McConnell/Ryan might directly harm them doesn't change the rotten, core of who they are...people who saw a message of hate and said "YEP! That's my guy! He's one of my people".

(2,654 posts)Pledging emphatically to empower America's "forgotten men and women," Donald Trump was sworn in as the 45th president of the United States Friday, taking command of a riven nation facing an unpredictable era under his assertive but untested leadership. Do you greet the Trump presidency with optimism or pessimism?
76%
Optimism. He made it clear that business as usual is over in Washington, and the people will have a greater voice in government.
21%
Pessimism. He had a chance to unite the country, but instead continued on a divisive course that is unlikely to change.
3%
No opinion.

Unless they have a come to Jesus moment about just how bad their votes screwed over the maginialized and oppressed, realize that a vote for Trump was a mistake on the order of invading Russia in the winter time, that they are bigots and admit they are bigots--and that they want to change this...AND however much they think they are suffering, realizing that their vote ensured that many people will go hungry, people will die because of a lack of preventive healthcare, as well as regular healthcare, that women will be abused and raped and die from lack of reproductive health and DV help, poor children will starve, people will suffer from a literal lack air as regulatory protections against pollution are eased, I could go on and on and on. They won't real8ze any of these things. They will only feel their own pain or discomfort.

If they regret what they did it's ok to forgive.
If they continue to believe the lies and believe it was President Obama who took away their insurance and their medicare and their social security it will be hard to sympathize with them at that point.

(16,423 posts)They take the popular view on a thing, and then twist and bend facts until they can somehow make an argument that exactly the opposite is true.
For example:
They tried to make an argument that the Empire in Star Wars is actually the good guys.
They tried to make an argument that the fictitious Persians in the movie 300 are actually the good guys, by talking about the historical Persians.
So edgy.
Another shtick is picking on what is obviously mistakes and oversights in movie-making and book-writing, and then using these aberrations as the basis for speculations why this movie or that book means something totally different than what everybody thinks.
For example:
Some fan-theory on Star Wars, based on the fact that there are Earth-ducks and Earth-bees in shots showing nature, or Earth-rats and Earth-snakes in shots showing Jabba's dungeon.
