The idea we are one people with Deplorables is patently absurd...
In many states when a convicted sex offender moves into a neighborhood the neighbors need to be made aware of his or her presence. A couple of years ago a convicted child molester moved into our apartment complex and all the residents received fliers notifying us of his presence. No, I am not saying Deplorables are child molesters, though some might be. That sounds Trumpian so pretend I didn't say it. What I am saying is the suggestion that we are bound to one another based on real estate is absurd. I didn't feel to bound to him because we occupy the same piece of real estate, at all. I am bound to people by ideals and not blood and soil.

(22,839 posts)We don't need flyers this time, we know exactly what house this sex offender lives in now. Disgusting.

(22,839 posts)We do have a sex offender living in the People's House. We're not obligated to connect with him on a level deeper or higher than just recognizing that fact, he is a predator. A fact which we all should find deeply disturbing, imo.

(99,716 posts)It is as absurd as suggesting my maternal grandfather was bound to the Polish policeman who hit him in the ear and perforated his ear drum for the crime of being a Jew was bound to him because they were both Polish citizens.
P.S. I believe there was a period in American history when Americans felt so bound to one with one another they organized to kill each other.

(58,724 posts)It's the foundational concept behind the idea of nation-states, and, in particular, democracies like ours.

(99,716 posts)My grandfather and the anti-semitic cop who hit him in the ear and perforated his ear drum for the crime of being a Jew were part of the same nation-state, was he not?
Should he have felt at one with him? At home in Poland ? My bubba and him got the hell out of there.
BTW, we are a republic, not a democracy. If we were the latter Secretary Clinton would be president, the most votes and all...

(58,724 posts)That doesn't invalidate the concept of civic duty and the value of living in a democratic country like the United States.
One of the benefits of living in a democratic country like ours is knowing that we can take steps to ensure those wrongdoers (such as an anti-semitic officer who attacks a civilian for no reason) get appropriately punished.
If we didn't feel a sense of collective responsibility for the United States to live up to basic shared values then violence would be more prevalent and the weak would be more vulnerable to attack.
This can be seen in numerous failed states around the world.
My personal belief, even in the face of the ugliness of Trump and his ilk who have come to power espousing the worst of everything, is that we are, as Hillary Clinton said, "stronger together".

(58,724 posts)But I still believe in the ideals espoused by Obama and Clinton with regard to the United States and the importance of trying to work together even with those with whom we disagree.

(58,724 posts)I guess that is my point. The very idea of being a Democrat means supporting policies and programs that help all Americans regardless of their political proclivities. One of the many things I admired about Obama and the Clintons (and Democratic policitians in general) is how inclusive they are - as opposed to the Trump/Bannon rhetoric which seem to be all about giving a middle finger to anyone who doesn't support or agree with them.

(99,716 posts)I don't want them to lose things like health care. But we can't gloss over the fact that there is painfully little that unites us. Even they would agree.

(58,724 posts)I guess the problem for me is that I know (and am related to) some good people whom I care about deeply who voted for Trump, so it's hard for me to say that his voters are all nazis. I know that they are not. A lot are just misguided or ignorant.
