Penn State's reputation, image soiled by Jerry Sandusky scandal
<snip>
But there is no indication that the board was ever told McQuearys story back then. There is an indication, however, that the feds want to know how much they knew. A subpoena from the Department of Justice requested records of any payments by board members to the university or to third parties on the universitys behalf.
Many of them werent aware that the ongoing three-year investigation into Sandusky had been reported by The Patriot-News. They didnt know Paterno, Schultz and Curley had testified before the grand jury.

And then there are the lawsuits. Already there are five. And Penn States insurance carrier is suing to limit its coverage.Penn State is suing back, but if any top administration officials are found guilty of knowing about the allegations, the insurance company probably wont have to pay for claims that were made after 2001. So, if the insurance company were to prevail, almost every penny spent on the scandal would come from Penn States general fund or its endowment.

However, Hartle said the Department of Education which is investigating whether Penn State violated the Clery Act by not reporting campus crimes has the ability to withhold student aid funding to an institution.

The ongoing investigations could bring more charges. The feds, the NCAA, the Department of Education and the inevitable litigation that will go to court could eventually make everything more clear.
But its the Freeh report that Penn State has promised that will begin to put together the pieces of what happened in Old Main.

This isn't over by a long shot. PSU will be dealing with this for a while.
