Chris Hayes Has Arrived With ‘Up’

http://www.nytimes.com/2012/06/24/fashion/chris-hayes-has-arrived-with-up.html?smid=tw-share&pagewanted=all

AROUND 11 p.m. on a Friday this past spring, Ted Leo, a singer and songwriter considered something of a legend in New York punk and indie-rock, opened a raucous late set at the Black Cat club in Washington with a curious greeting to his followers.

“I know how hard it is to be here,” he joked to a crowd of about 750, a Gibson hollow-body drooping from his shoulder, “because you all have to be up at 8 a.m. tomorrow to watch ‘Up With Chris Hayes.’ ”

(snip)
While MSNBC’s overall ratings dipped in May along with those of other news channels, Mr. Hayes’s program was one of the few to surge, rising about 15 percent in total viewers over MSNBC’s programming in the time slot from the previous year. Since Dec. 26, it has been No. 1 on average in its Sunday time slot on cable news channels among viewers ages 18 to 34, according to Nielsen figures provided by the network. Despite much of the country being in bed when it is on, “Up” has occasionally flirted with the ratings of prime-time programs like “The Rachel Maddow Show” (hosted by Mr. Hayes’s mentor) among those 18-to-34 viewers.

(snip)
His influence goes beyond ratings. Rolling Stone listed him in a recent Hot issue. On Esquire’s Web site, Charles P. Pierce called him “the fastest rising star in your cable teevee firmament.”

be lost in such an early (and, to some, impossible) time schedule. this is "cool beans" indeed. I am a lot older than his set, but I feel like this was a long time coming and now is here! Wonderful!

I love his show and now plan my weekends around it. How strange is that?

not with trash shows like morning joe and the other "shows" that you infect with SE Cupp/Michael Steele/Ed Rendell/Harold Ford and all the other wishy-washies & right wing zealots.

People WILL watch intelligent shows that allow real conversation and TRUTH instead of nonsensical "on this hand and on the other hand". The "method" MSNBC uses would have allowed Hitler apologists to weigh in during WWII if MSNBC had been around then.

specifically why I choose Hayes and MHP over MJ:

I'm tired of the retread old farts. Mike Barnicle is a big bore, Carl Bernstein doesn't have an original thought in his sour head. The parade of rightwing lunatics in Congress can no longer be tolerated. Hayes and MHP have new, dynamic, whip smart people who actually know what they are talking about and have exciting ideas. The legislators they have on are smart and interesting.

I'm super tired of watching Mika being yelled out and interrupted by an a-hole who is a loudmouth jerk. Hayes is respectful of women and actually listens to them and MHP is a delightful host to her panelists, engaging them in bright, informative discussions.

I'm super sick of panel after panel without ONE woman present, talking about the burning issues of the day and then lapsing into little pissy boys who act like they need to be re-potty trained. Hayes has diverse panels and practically always has one or more women on them as does MHP. Racial diversity is always the norm, period.

My MJ watching has dropped dramatically. I switch over to Current but I do find that the format (host sitting behind a mike at a desk) to be a bit boring. I'm hoping that will pick up as time goes on...

I wish I had Chris and Melissa on every weekday morning (altho I sure wouldn't get much done around the house!)...

and all the other "prison" crap that MSNBC runs on weekends to fill air-time? And sorry to break it to the NYT but there are millions who ARE "up" by 8 am (and often WAY before then). Maybe NYers "sleep in" but these generalizations are just pure nonsense and get my goat.

Unfortunately, 8 am translates to 5 am where I am, but I love that I can catch it online at my leisure.

MSNBC's Chris Hayes joins Kathleen Dunn to discuss why he thinks the idea of meritocracy produces a corrupt ruling class.

Guest: Chris Hayes, host of "Up with Chris Hayes," on MSNBC. Author, "Twilight of the Elites: America After Meritocracy."

Need it desperately!

Because, face it, we've lost some VERY big presences like Olbermann, and even people like Anthony Wiener and Alan Grayson, and we just don't have a lot of mouths out there speaking out, making noise, and scoring points like the opposition does. We need EVERY plausible recruit we can find. They're the future.

As he builds and is further groomed, and we find more like him, we'll be better-equipped to make the liberal/progressive/Democratic case. But first you've got to build up your bench strength. Find the talent and try 'em out and start working 'em. I mean, consider how many there are crowding into the club house on the other side. They have dozens. Hundreds, even. We have something like maybe 14 or 15. NOT NEARLY ENOUGH!!!

We're like Luxembourg going after the People's Republic in a military stand-off. That HAS TO change. That's another reason why hires like s.e. cupp on MSNBC must be thoroughly resisted. People like her have a whole frickin' cable network to overpopulate. We don't need the likes of her infiltrating our territory.

Just read a piece in the June 10 Sunday NYT Magazine about how liberals have to stop watching/listening to RW radio and TV. We need to get our message "out there." But we don't have to dwell on the drivel from the RW.
Publicly supporting Chris and Melissa is far more important!

I am now a reformed Morning Joe regular. I purposely turn off/mute what I know is going to be another stupid RW rant designed to make me angrier and thinking less about what I need to be doing positively, not reacting to negative sh*t. It does free up the mind. I'm not totally divorced from MJ but am being lots more selective and leaving out more and more. I've seen the light (thanks to my friends here on DU who "told me so" and now I am at last listening to their wise counsel).
