The United States Versus NATO

The Unites States has a nominal GDP that is just as big as all the other NATO countries combined. There is not one country in NATO that has anywhere near the GDP of the United States. Of course most NATO countries pay less to be a part of NATO than the United States. They have far less money to spare than the United States. The nominal GDPs of many of these countries is less than the United States spends on the Defense Department.

They generally have a lower percent of their population in active military duty than does the US. Poland, for example, has 2.6 on active duty per 1000 population, while the USA has 4.6 / 1000 population. Since personnel costs should be low in Eastern Europe, this indicates that they are not taking their security seriously.
