BIRMINGHAM, Ala. The explosions of violence that have marked a broken trust between U.S. law enforcement and communities of color across the country echo the painful clashes that marked the early struggles of the American civil rights movement, Attorney General Loretta Lynch said in an interview with USA TODAY Sunday.
I really think the world is watching how we deal with these issues, Lynch said in the wide-ranging interview here where she had traveled to commemorate Martin Luther King weekend events.
Lynch is preparing to leave office following a tumultuous 20-month tenure, also punctuated by a string of deadly mass shootings, a disputed investigation of Democratic presidential nominee Hillary Clinton and ongoing concerns about the extent of Russia's interference in the U.S. elections. But her legacy will likely be defined by the Justice Departments aggressive oversight of more than two dozen police agencies across the country.
Lynch said technology, specifically the speed of digital media and video-enabled smart phones, accelerated the recent scrutiny of police operations in ways that many had not anticipated. "Policing became front and center, because technology put it front and center, Lynch said.
In much of the country where encounters between police and the public have not been in the forefront, "it's been a real eye opener."
"We have broadened the debate and engaged on the issues in a more meaningful and real way."

(70,153 posts)are we going to let this beacon of democracy just flicker out, or are we going to find a way to rekindle it? can struggling democracies everywhere survive w/o it's light?
the whole world is watching.
that was one of the first buttons i made when w was selected. we sent a terrible message then, and those of us who saw it as a harbinger of things to come have been proved cassandra level prescient.
we must write a new chapter out of this catastrophe.

(16,887 posts)We can't let it flicker out....but we are facing unprecedented and dangerous times and actually so are most of the worlds democracies right now.... We have alt-right, Germany has "alternativ für Deutschland" (AFD), France "Marine Le Pen" and so on....
If our greatest Constitutional minds and intelligence community can't stop this and members of congress and senate have been compromised and conspired to allow this to happen, our Republic is doomed and our beacon of light extinguished for all to see and be inspired by.
I dare to say it, but dark days are ahead and I see a future that is going to be horrible for decades if not a "new century" before it has been turned around and the light can shine again. And that is assuming we haven't gone the path of mass destruction of the planet and human race by these climate change deniers and waging of wars globally, including with nuclear arms.

we shall see.
in the end we will win, but there will be a lot of darkness, and a terribly dangerous precedent has been sent.
