Educators: Kids aren't the only ones bullied

Educators: Kids aren't the only ones bullied
By Hannah Weinberger, Special to CNN

(CNN) - People around the world were shocked and horrified by a viral video that showed Karen Klein, a 68-year-old public school bus monitor, desperately trying to ignore malicious verbal jabs by a group of middle schoolers on her own bus.

For most, it was extreme. For many educators and school staff members, it's no surprise. School workers said it’s a regular aspect of their daily lives.

“I’ve had erasers thrown at me, among other things, but these are things that teachers go through,” said Rosalind Wiseman, author of the bestseller “Queen Bees and Wannabes.”

“When these types of things come up, there’s all of this attention. But most teachers have at least had one student call them a bad name under their breath."

instigating trouble in class, yelling, running and jumping in the hallways, talking over the teacher, refusing to follow school rules, refusing an adult's directions, lying about a staff member, trying to look at porn, violating other computer web based rules, bullying coaches, sex texting and making up sex stories about adults in school, menacing the bus drivers, school aides and anyone else who can become a target, refusing to do their homework, refusing to turn in their homework and lying about that.

On a weekly basis, hitting staff, pushing staff, calling home for the parent/caregiver to tear into a staff member about something untrue, cheating, lying about cheating, stealing.

These are America's children in school. And before people want to argue with me about 'Not my kid' or 'Not my school'...yes, your kids and yes your school.
Get your heads out of denial.

Most of us have worked in at least one school like that. For me it was a year in an insane asylum where the kids smoked pot outside at lunch.

I taught middle school for 12 years. I do not miss it.

An exerpt:

"Much attention has been paid to students who bully students in class, after school and on the Internet. Less has been given to equally disturbing behavior by students who harass instructors, principals and other adults.

"It's something that's long existed; think ganging up on the substitute teacher. But it has become increasingly cruel and even dangerous as students get access to advanced technology at earlier ages.

"In Maryland, students posed as their vice principal's twin 9-year-old daughters on pedophile websites, saying they had been having sex with their father and were looking for a new partner. Elsewhere, students have logged on to neo-Nazi and white supremacist sites claiming to be a Jewish or minority teacher and inciting the groups' anger. Others have stolen photographs from teachers' cellphones and posted them online."

I think I have had more adults try to bully me since I became an adult than I ever dealt with as a kid.
