If you can't get the word out and defend against the negative ads then it is irresponsible to be running at all. They gotta do what they gotta do.
Like a sports team not having proper equipment or a coach not showing up for the game. There are constituencies for everything and they (We) are what the president is responsible to, in theory at least.
Frankly, if I were rich I would give only to PACs at this time because they can do what is necessary to get the job done.
Granted if we don't get the money out of the political campaign field, we are done with any form of citizen democracy. Its almost to late as it is.
