Resist From This Day Forward!

From this day forward, for the duration of the current political era, let every right thinking American, no matter their political persuasion, who can bring themselves to put country and democracy before narrow partisan advantage, take it as their first duty to attempt, by any constitutionally permitted means necessary, to rescue our democracy and the institutions of government from the monstrosity that is Donald Trump.

Let us resist him at every turn, until he either resign his office or is impeached and removed from that office, or, in the extremely unlikely alternate, he so chagrined by our resistance that he learns to govern with humility and circumspection. Of course, we know that in all likelihood he is simply entirely incapable of such humility and circumspection. He has shown himself to be a depraved monster, who cares only for his own ego aggrandizement.

The great John Lewis is right that he is an illegitimate president.

He is a minority president who entirely lacks popular legitimacy. He governs not with the consent and endorsement of the people, but contrary to the will of the people.

Even his formal legitimacy is in question. He may well have colluded with the Russians, a hostile foreign power, to usurp the presidency. But even if he did not collude, Russian interference and the behavior of the FBI director, together with the eagerness of the American media to allow itself to be exploited, robbed the anti-democratic, but constitutional procedure by which he was installed of any semblance of legitimacy.

Since he was not elected by means of a free and fair election or any process untainted by scandal, the monster deserves no more deference than the constitution requires.

From the moment he swears the oath of office, he will be in violation of the constitution, because of his greedy and self-serving impulse to use his office for personal gain, thus further eroding his already baseless claims to legitimacy.

Let a phalanx of opposition grow and deepen.

Let every economic actor disfavored by his refusal to divest of his business, sue for relief from the courts.

Let every citizen whose voice he would silence, band together in loud and disruptive protest,

Let every thinking person who can take pen to paper and forcefully articulate the grounds of our resistance make their voices heard in every outlet that will give them space.

Let every Senator and Representative who has a vote, use that vote on behalf of the people.

Let every journalist who seeks to serve the people rather than suck up to power call him out at every turn.

Let the volume of our resistance be so overwhelming that it haunts him every moment and every day, in his sleep, when he first awakens, as he goes about his daily business.

Let the voice of our determined resistance drown out every dark voice that vies for his will!
