Maj. General Schwartz was appointed by GWB and he's seen his share of protests and celebrations during his tenure.

I suspect he was relieved of his command because he was part of the Presidential Inauguration Committee planning meetings and was asked to commit to certain actions relative to protesters that conflicted with his understanding of the constitution and civil rights.

I'm sure the Trump supporter assuming command will have no issues preforming his duties to the satisfaction of the PIC.

...he may have just gotten caught up in the ineptitude of the transition team accepting a binder full of perfunctory resignations.

That said, there's been enough publicity about this one where they could easily say - whoops...we don't want a new guy on the job day 1...let's back this off 24-48 hours. They could always position it as "Obama accepted the resignation and that's just another screwup we're gonna fix".

My read is that he didn't "choose to leave at that time" but rather that's the end of his posting if it's not re-upped.
