I understand why our elected officials value input from their constituents more so than those that are not. However, I believe when they are on committees, such as the House Oversight Committee, we should be able to reach them more easily.
I wanted to fire off an email to Jason Chaffetz to express my anger at his actions to intimidate Walter Schaub. But he only accepts emails from his district. That doesn't sit well with me.
Similarly, I wanted to praise Rep. John Lewis for his comments, but he doesn't accept emails outside of his district either.
sigh...that's it...just wanted to say I think they should be more available to the public.

(30,749 posts)Find a zip code in their district and send an email. That works.

(58,785 posts)more accessible to those they are most immediately supposed to represent. I imagine even that corrupt thug Chaffetz started out accepting emails from outside until they grew to such a volume that they buried everything else.
Btw, Comey colluded with Chaffetz to leak his letter to Congress to the press to subvert the election. Maybe, just maybe Chaffetz will end up being sacrificed on this fire as part of a GOP "cleansing." We know big crimes have been committed. And yesterday the Senate was finally forced to open an investigation. Chaffetz undoubtedly got that message at least.

(12,157 posts)because the system uses zipcodes. I live in a particular congressional district but my zipcode is in another district. It doesn't matter if I use the whole 9 digit zipcode. The problem of not being able to contact committee members is wrong. There should be a separate mailbox list by committees that will receive mail from anywhere in the country. I complained about both issues to the congressional webmaster way back in the bUSH years to no avail. I think THEY like it like this.

(1,168 posts)government is concerned, you contact your member of Congress or your two Senators. Beyond that you contact the Whitehouse. Being a member of a committee is nice and all but committees set up bills and/or tweek them for final votes to the full chamber. That is where your member of Congress decides yes or no. Also, if you feel that you have a message to send to a committee then you will get batter traction by having your members of Congress or Senators convey your message. It doesn't matter what party a committee member belongs to that individual is representing his state or congressional district not the whole country. Sorry if this offends.
