Evanston, Ill. police violently arrest man "stealing" his own car

You can hear the "suspect" being polite and answering all the questions directly:

Evanston Police released a dash cam video on Wednesday of a 2015 interaction between an officer and a black engineering doctoral candidate accused of stealing his own car.

On October 10, 2015, a woman called the cops on Lawrence Crosby—who was working on his own vehicle—to report that a black man appeared to be breaking into a car and stealing it, Fox Chicago reports.

“Hi somebody’s trying to break into, somebody’s trying to break into a car,” she told the 9-11 dispatcher, later adding, ”I think the person just got into the car.”

Crosby was driving towards the Northwestern University campus when police pulled him over. His car was equipped with its own dash cam video, and on the recording Crosby can be heard telling someone he suspected he was being followed.

Police pulled him over in a church parking lot, where Crosby was violently detained for stealing his own car.

The judge threw out the charges against the vehicle owner, but it doesn't appear there will be any consequences for the police.

that she didn't mean to be racial profiling, but it makes you wonder.

Quite a "dog pile" of cops that tackled the poor guy!

9. She said that he had some sort of bar in his hands and looked as if he was prying the door.

In fact, he said that before he got into the car, he had fixed or adjusted a piece of loose trim or molding. I can see how that could look like prying the door after dark and from more than a minimal distance. Can't really fault the woman for reporting what she saw.

Did look like an overreaction by the police, though.

3. His only mistake was getting out of the car. Wait in the car for the officer to approach you

getting out like that is the most dangerous thing ANY driver can do because it is seen as aggression and scares the hell out of the cops.
That said the stop itself was total bullshit.
If he waited in the car he could have shown them his lic and reg to prove ownership and driven away after.

4. We need to have national courses like gun safety

"How to help police not kill you if you are black and being pulled over"

As we know, only non white folks will need the course.

was this was a black man. Sure enough this happened to a black man. It sucks the way we treat our Black brothers and sisters as well as our Native American's.

Thinking about it makes me sick to my stomach.

10. And Evanston prides itself on being more liberal than other places in Cook County

like Cicero, whose racism brought MLK to tears. So much for that brilliant plan.
