What a wonderful group of ladies.
Somewhere in West Tennessee, not far from Graceland, nine women -- or "The 9 Nanas," as they prefer to be called -- gather in the darkness of night. At 4am they begin their daily routine -- a ritual that no one, not even their husbands, knew about for 30 years. They have one mission and one mission only: to create happiness. And it all begins with baked goods. ...
One of the sisters suggested that we should all start doing our own laundry and put the money we saved to good use. I admit, I protested at first. Theres just something about laundering that I dont like. But I was outnumbered! So among the nine of us, wed put aside about $400 a month and our husbands never noticed a thing. Their shirts looked just fine. ...
And then the women started listening. Theyd eavesdrop -- all with good intentions, of course -- at the local beauty shop or when they were picking up groceries. And when they heard about a widow or a single mom who needed a little help, theyd step in and anonymously pay a utility bill or buy some new clothes for the children. ...
We gave new meaning to the term drive-by, Mary Ellen said with delight. Wed drive through low-income neighborhoods and look for homes that had fans in the window. That told us that the people who lived there didnt have air-conditioning. Or wed see that there were no lights on at night, which meant there was a good chance their utilities had been turned off. Then wed return before the sun came up, like cat burglars, and drop off a little care package.

(4,442 posts)And she is often really heartbroken over the world and the way people sometimes behave toward each other and to nature. Lately i have been trying to remind her that wicked is not all there is but that it is just louder and more visible as a result.
I told her about this story and because of it i was able to verify what i have been telling her for sometime. That good truly does move as readily, if not more, than wickedness. It just usually does so more quietly and draws less attention to itself.
That is one of the most beautiful aspects of this story, that they did what they did simply for the recipient and not for themselves. May the waves produced by their actions reach far.

Thanks for posting this, I now start my day with a big smile on my face and a strengthened belief there are many more good and caring people than there are the opposite.

(3,238 posts)Silly ol' brain. I love this story. I try to be a good egg whenever I can and help. I found a wad of cash near the entrance of the grocery store ($230), turned it in, and it got reunited with the sweet little old lady who dropped it. I actually got to talk to her on the phone. She was so happy that I had turned it in. It was all of her money for the month. Kudos to the store for doing the right thing too, and not pocketing it.
