WASHINGTON In his news conference on Wednesday, President-elect Donald J. Trump claimed that the American public did not care that he had not released his tax returns, as has been routine for every presidential nominee since Watergate. He could not be more wrong. When I asked users on Twitter, the president-elects favored megaphone, to retweet if they cared about Mr. Trumps tax returns, within hours more than 79,000 people responded.
The reason is simple. Without these returns, Americans cannot know whether he is using the presidency to enrich himself and his family. Americans wont know whether a policy he proposes primarily benefits steelworkers in Pennsylvania or lines his own pocket.
They will also be unable to tell whether Mr. Trump is telling the truth when he claims to have no connections to Russia, contradicting public evidence and statements by his own son. His stated excuse about being under audit doesnt pass the smell test. Previous presidents and nominees have released their returns under the same circumstances.
Thats why I and dozens of congressional colleagues have introduced legislation to force future presidential nominees and presidents to release their tax returns. As representatives of the people, if we cant trust the executive branch to act ethically, we must force it to do so.

(9,350 posts)The title of the article, in this post, should have been Why Americans Should Care About Trumps Tax Returns. In this instance Donald Trump is right, clearly many Americans do not care that he did not release his tax returns. Ron Wyden, the author of the article, stated that within hours of him asking people to retweet if they cared about Donald Trump's tax returns 79,000 people retweeted his tweet. I do not know how many people use twitter, but I do have an estimate of how many people live in the United States and how many people voted for Donald Trump. There are about 330 million people living in the United States and about 60 million people voted for Donald Trump in November's election. If people cared about his tax returns they would not have voted for him. So, clearly people do not care about his tax returns.
