Puritopians

Last edited Thu Jan 12, 2017, 08:57 PM - Edit history (1)

From the Urban Dictionary

http://www.urbandictionary.com/define.php?term=Puritopian

A Puritopian is a self-described liberal or progressive whose political orientation is to be angry, dissatisfied and unhappy with the state of the nation, because in their view, liberal policies are not being implemented quickly or forcefully enough. They have particular contempt for Democratic presidents.

Puritopians dislike Republicans but reserve their greatest disdain for Democratic presidents, whom they relentlessly attack for not meeting a set of ideological goal posts that are constantly adjusted to ensure that the president will be deemed a disappointment, "not progressive enough" or "just like a Republican" no matter what policy achievements are made.

Puritopians have an affinity for 3rd party politics as a way to punish Democratic presidents. They are especially hostile to President Obama and deem anyone who expresses a lack of ill will toward him to be "Obamabots" and enemies of liberalism.

Sounds familiar....

Yup, there's a section who thinks that way, but may I suggest not embracing use of the term.

This sort of thing is like a pie fight: there's always splash, splatter, and misses that hit someone other than your intended target.

My question is: What purpose does it serve to find one more way to sneer at people? Particularly if people who aren't the target but are along the same line of sight think you're sneering at them? It's the stuff the circular firing squad is made from.

And by no means do I imply that you're the only one who could do with pondering that question. The same applies in the other direction.

Sorry you think so. We've had enough discussions here about neo-liberals and DINOs and purity and Obama bashing to last me a lifetime but this is a sneer? I thought it was a good name for it without being nasty. Those people have no intention of voting for a Democrat or supporting the party, so I don't get the circular firing squad reference. People with all sorts of ideas and beliefs are welcome in the party, but those who only want to stab Democrats in the back time after time are trying to take the party down. Do I always go along with the party line? No. I sometimes disagree about certain things but overall I see that the Democrats are far better for our country than Republicans. Anyone who preferred a Trump presidency deserves anything anyone can throw at them whether their intentions were pure or not.

JMHO.

being advertised by people who wish we'd all walk in lockstep like Republicans do.

Yes, some people, mostly young, voted third party because they were disappointed in the Democratic nominee and hated Trump. There weren't enough to change the election results and now they realize why voting third party is a bad idea, at least until the political landscape changes drastically enough to allow a third party a real chance.

Being pissy about something that wasn't your choice and that you can't change is futile. I sincerely hope that particular neologism gets voted down quickly at Urban Dictionary. They're better than this.

So are we.

I come from a line of those. Truth be told they are "clean" but historically not stupid like the neo version.
