Judith Wallerstein, researcher on divorce, dies
Judith S. Wallerstein, an internationally known psychologist and authority on issues of marriage and divorce, died Sunday at her daughter's home in Piedmont. She was 90.
Dr. Wallerstein, a longtime resident of Belvedere, was the author of five major books, most based on her long-term research into the effects of divorce and marital breakups on children and most of them best-sellers. She also founded the Judith Wallerstein Center for the Family in Transition, a research, education and counseling facility in Corte Madera.
From 1966 to 1991, she taught at UC Berkeley's School of Social Welfare, and it was there that she began her 25-year groundbreaking research into the lives of couples and their children when the marriages ended.
Her books, written with Sandra Blakeslee, included "Surviving the Breakup: How Children and Parents Cope With Divorce," "Second Chances: Men, Women and Children a Decade After Divorce," "The Good Marriage: How and Why Love Lasts," "The Unexpected Legacy of Divorce: A 25-year Landmark Study" and "What About the Kids? Raising Children Before, During and After Divorce."
