About Russian Hacking attempts

Recently I logged into my Gmail account and saw a request from Instagram to log into my account to read a private message. I don't have an Instagram account. Looking at the link I could also see it was to a .RU domain. Then I got another email request to log into my Facebook account.

When sites like DemocraticUnderground get hacked, hackers aren't just looking for your password to the site that was hacked, they are looking for member emails to target for phishing campaigns.

If I had clicked on either of those links to "log in" to Instagram or Facebook, I would have given those hackers my password. I believe sites like DU were hacked because factions in Russia see it as part of the Democratic movement, to be targeted in their attempt to compromise political opponents to Russia and the Republican party.

So please NEVER click a link sent to you be email. If you see a notice to log into any website you are a member of (Instagram, FB, etc.) just go to the site via your bookmarks and log in like normal.

DU is my only political outlet, outside of Reddit. I don't know if the two phishing attempts I received were random, or if it was due to the recent hack against DU. If it were the latter, members here need to be on heightened alert against more hack attempts targeting their email accounts. I'm sure Putin's team is looking for more fodder for Julian.
