Actually, it's not something that comes about through a rational, thought out decision. It comes down to instinct.

Years ago, I had a brand new Toyota pickup. One night, I came around a curve, there was a deer in the middle of the road and there was no time to think. I turned the wheel, ended up inverted in the woods and my new pickup was totaled. (I didn't get hurt.)

But the deer lived.

I really hated losing my new wheels. But I've never had any regrets that the deer lived.

Wait, except in winter, then... there's nothing in the middle of the road but black ice and lost endothermic vertebrates.

Same results, different season.
