The winter of my new furnace.

It was the worst of times; it was the crappiest of times. I've been dinking around, trying to keep our 20-year-old furnace working this winter. Enough. Three days of below zero weather here in St. Paul, so I called an HVAC company I've helped with website content, and a brand new one is going in on Monday. I could have done without the expense, though.

Thanks, Trump! I'll send you the bill.

It was worth it for the efficiency aspect.

Perhaps you should take Trump's advice and refuse to pay the invoice. State that the work is unacceptable and offer to pay 1/2.

which means it's a year older than I am. I have several CO monitors scattered around but the poor old thing shows no signs of popping a weld, it just soldiers on, year after year. I wish they still made them like this. Bugger if I know what I can replace it with.

In those days the installed one huge one but now we got two smaller ones. The old one looked like a goddamn tank. The two new ones are sleeker and prolly much more efficient. But the problem was getting the thing out of the basement...THAT was a project. The dang thing had to be cut in half just to get it up the stairs from the basement...sheesh...

and it's not that big a furnace. It does a good job in the living room, where you're likely to find me on the computer, but keeps the other rooms chilly, something that actually suits me rather well. It's just an old, old furnace.

I don't see how anything could be more efficient than a firebox/heat exchanger right in the room.

20 years is about right for the old one to poop out on you. Enjoy the peace of mind along with the constant warmth.

this year. Now our lp gas boiler is back-up heat. The stove is beautiful and efficient, plus it has almost zero emissions. Couldn't be happier.

Yes, the thought of a furnace called a "Magic Chef" is a disturbing branding. But, it has gotten me through two <whisper> Climate Change driven Polar Vorticies. </whisper>

I'm kind of fond of the little guy even though every HVAC Professional who has ever seen it remarks, it appears it was installed and then the house was built around it.

On a life-hack note, it turns out a toilet brush is a perfect furnace cleaning tool.
