They win if they make you change your life because you're afraid.

And the old saying is "one man's freedom fighter is another man's traitor", not "one man's freedom fighter is another man's terrorist".

Cowards make that mistake when they target average people to make a political statement.

When I get on a plane, I almost always think about the possibility of a crash, but due to a bird strike or a mechanical failure. I very rarely think about the potential of someone on board being a terrorist.

Not the least bit hesitant to go to the mall or other public places.

There is a remote chance someone in public could be a psycho with a gun, either a "religious fanatic" or someone with mental illness (and those two categories are not mutually exclusive, of course), but I refuse to go about my life living in fear. It's senseless. Much greater chance of being involved in a serious vehicular accident, and that's not going to prevent me from driving either.

I know it could happen, but the odds are ridiculously low for that.

Domestic terrorists? Absolutely. Their hero is about to be sworn into presidential office. Thankfully, I live in a blue state, which gives me a bit of space from the real crazies, but we have our own brand of them up here.

I was in Boston when the marathon was bombed. Shit's real, I don't know why people pretend it's not.

The effects of 9/11 haunted us here directly for many months (breathing the fumes all through Christmas season) and I am close to several people whose lives were changed forever.

It's much more abstract to people who were not here. Hard to forget if you lived through it. Hard not to worry they'll go after Trump properties.

Nobody is coming to suburbia to commit a mass shooting or blow something up other than Johnny living down the block from you. I live and work in NYC, my family lives and works in NYC, my friends live and work in NYC. We get up and go about or business knowing that the city is a target and while being concerned about it. We manage to not be so absolutely petrified we want a Muslim registry, a wall or long guns. It seems that the people most afraid of the "Terries" are the one farthest from targets of interest.

But then again, I am gay and a Jew, so I have reasons to be afraid of terrorists. Do I let them determine how I live? FUCK NO! Also, I have a wide definition of "terrorist", so when I say I am afraid, in my mind, I am usually thinking neo-Nazi, Klucker, "Christian-oriented extremist" and then following up, way down in 4th place, "ISIS"-related...in that order.

Our old house had bullet holes in it. One day I was looking over the back fence and saw a cop shoot a guy. The guy was hurrying away, and then for some inexplicable reason he turned around and charged the cop. I'm sure he was on meth or pcp or something similar and he thought he was Superman. (This was before bath salts.) The guy didn't die, but he was shot to death a few years later by an unknown assailant.

I used to play with our kids on the floor of our back room whenever I heard gunshots.

The car I drive has a bullet hole in it. We bought it from a guy who had lived in a similarly bad neighborhood.

We're in a better neighborhood now, but I could still do a walking tour of places where people have been shot. Our frequently graffiti-covered back wall is on a major path to the high school. Painting it over, especially the gang stuff, is a never-ending chore. If it's not painted over it grows explosively, especially if rival gangs start painting over one another's work with increasingly vile threats.

And you know what? I don't even worry about that shit. Why would I worry about some vague "terrorists?"

off of San Juan Grade road. It used to be a nice neighborhood.

When I left there in 1997, my house, and several of my neighbor's houses had bullet holes in them.

Neighborhoods change over time.

Its huge in my county because of drugs and getting worse. My husband stopped 3 guys yesterday who were casing around, called the cops, they came out but could only yell at them because they were casing neighborhood not doing the crime.

Guy in back seat on probation for burglary, driver no license...third guy was warned off before cops came and fled. He was down the street getting ready to rob someone.

My hubby knocked on every door with flier he made with info. He was angry.

My hubby sits at desk that over looks our street. The crime has been done daylight while people at work. All the neighbors thanked him since most were gone.

I'm more afraid of daily life in a large city.

Number of times I've almost been mugged: 2 (I say "almost" because I can run very fast.)

Number of times I've been in auto accidents involving a trip to the hospital in a neck brace: 2

Number of random shootings/attacks I've been in: 0.

Edited to add: I still go out whenever I want. I'm not worried about any of these things.
