David Cay Johnston began covering Donald Trump in the 1980s when he was working as the Atlantic City reporter for the Philadelphia Inquirer. Johnstons new book, "The Making of Donald Trump," looks at a side of Trump seldom covered in the press: his ties to the mob, drug traffickers and felons.
AMY GOODMAN: To talk more about Donald Trump, were joined now by David Cay Johnston, whos followed Trumps career for decades. His biography of Trump has just been published. Its titled The Making of Donald Trump and examines Trumps rise to prominence. David Cay Johnston is a Pulitzer Prize-winning investigative reporter, previously with The New York Times, now a columnist for The Daily Beast.
Welcome back to Democracy Now! Its nice to have you in studio. Why dont we start off with your response to what Trump said yesterday?
DAVID CAY JOHNSTON: Well, Ive been listening to right-wing radio about this, and all sorts of people are saying, "There goes the liberal media again. He never said that." He certainly said it to people who are zealots, people who are deranged, people who are dangerous. And without question, this was way beyond the pale. But, you know, this will happen again. This is who Donald Trump is. He is a bully. He is someone who believes that whatever he thinks is in his interest in the moment is in the national interest.
JUAN GONZÁLEZ: Well, David, youve been following Trump now for decades, going back toeven back when you were, what, a bureau chief for the Philadelphia Inquirer in Atlantic City
DAVID CAY JOHNSTON: Yes.
JUAN GONZÁLEZ: when he was beginning to get his casinos going there in Atlantic City. Whats been the main thread that youve taken away from your years of studying his operations.

(51,076 posts)but when we elected a black man as our President, Good Honest Man, Awesome President BTW, the racist aholes started coming out of the wood work. Now with this racist piece of shit and like you said bringing on a whole new generation of racist little kids we're truly fucked. Unless one happens to be a white racist mail then in that case it will be an awesome future they will inherit. I'm just glad I'm nearing the end of my existence. That last statement is truly scary to me as it is unlike me so much to even entertain that kind of thinking for a second.
President Barack Obama will be remembered as one of, if not, the, very best of our modern Presidents.
