House Republicans Drop Efforts To Gut Ethics Watchdog After Onslaught Of Criticism

House Republicans dropped their plans to gut the Office of Congressional Ethics after receiving criticism from lawmakers, watchdog groups and President-elect Donald Trump.

Republicans decided to scrap an amendment by Rep. Bob Goodlatte (R-Va.) during an emergency conference meeting on Tuesday.

NOTE: Washington Post posted a misleading headline about the matter saying: "Trump Slams Republicans for Voting Behind Closed Doors to Weaken Ethics Office" -- what ACTUALLY happened is that Trump only slammed them for the TIMING of it.

Proper (non-misleading) headline would read: "Trump slams House GOP for poor timing in weakening 'unfair' ethics committee."

Trump called the Ethics Office "unfair" this morning. His primary concern was the public perception problem, not the corruption problem.
