Guam Legislature debates wage hike bill

Guam lawmakers seem divided on the proposal to incrementally raise the island’s minimum wage to $10.10 over the next two years.

During the Legislature’s session Tuesday, senators deliberated Bill 312-33, which intends to raise the minimum wage from $8.25 an hour to $9.20 next year, then again to $10.10 in 2018.

The author of the measure, Vice Speaker Benjamin Cruz, D-Piti, has said Guam’s workers deserve better wages. The increases, he said, would help struggling families as well as reduce the amount of those who depend on government assistance.

Other lawmakers fear the wage hikes would negatively impact employees and small businesses.
