(8,854 posts)...I was reading the comments at the Daily Mail site and someone raised the possibility of these two women having been kidnapped by Boko Haram and used for these suicide bombings. It's speculation, but entirely possible.

(32,997 posts)was holding her loved ones as a hostage, that would change my opinion. Thanks for sharing that comment.

(2,955 posts)Killing a crowd of innocent people because they're holding your loved ones hostage? Sorry, that's still not an understandable action. They'll probably just kill your loved ones anyway, and you'll be dead so you won't get to see them released even if it happens.

(8,854 posts)Just that, as with most things, there could be more to the story. A loved one--maybe even and infant--being held hostage may or may not be enough to convince some people to become a suicide bomber. I honestly have no idea what I'd do in such a lose-lose situation, especially if I were being monitored by my captors. I'd like to think that I'd detonate the bomb while in the presence of my captors instead of while in the midst of a bunch of innocent people but I don't know exactly how it played out for these women and whether that would have been an option for them.

(1,430 posts)Sounds suspicious

(8,854 posts)The Daily Mail is the link in the OP. And someone in the comments section raising the possibility of these women committing these acts under duress seems reasonable. Even if it turns out that that's not what happened it is not a speculation that I would dismiss out of hand considering that this took place in Nigeria, Nigeria is where Boko Haram calls home, and Boko Haram is known for kidnapping women and girls.

(1,430 posts)From the comments section . That's why I said suspicious

(8,854 posts)...and you'll find the same story from other sources. Even sources that we don't like do report on actual events. As far as the comment from the comments section, I still don't get what's suspicious about it. Just sounded to me like a person who is aware of what's going on in Nigeria and saw it as a very real possibility that Boko Haram which commits terrorist acts AND kidnaps women could have decided to combine those two things. Just seemed like food for thought to me.

(44,974 posts)mob. If somebody is trying to kill you, you presumably aren't going to be concerned about what their circumstances are.
skypilot
(8,854 posts)...that the bomber walks into then NO, I'm not concerned about their circumstances. But from the relative safety of where I am right now it does no harm to consider such things.

(4,490 posts)Not sure I'd consider the killing of a woman who was trying to set off a bomb she was wearing a "lynching".

(3,212 posts)And apparently trying to detonate it herself, which doesn't indicate that she was unwilling. If that were the case, the bomb would have been detonated by remote.
I'm not into mob justice, but if anyone deserves it, it's someone who was going to blow herself up along with several other people. Dead is dead is dead.

(6,241 posts)They had no idea that the bomb was a dud. They saw she was trying to set it off. They stopped her, and saved their own lives.
Sucks for her, but she was dead the moment she put on that vest. Either she would detonate it, she would be shot by police, or this alternatives. This is probably the best way it could have played out for the innocent people in the crowd.

(2,955 posts)If somebody failed to detonate a suicide vest around me, I'd honestly be pretty tempted to stomp their face into the ground until there wasn't much left. Fuck suicide bombers. One of the lowest and most cowardly ways to fight for a cause is to blow yourself up in a crowd of innocents. It's right up there with people who shoot up schools and such.

(30,481 posts)Not sure what that has to do with anything anyway. Blood thirst is a way of life.

(12,412 posts)I have a fear that many bombers are victims of the cowards that kidnap them. We do not know if abductees are forced to wear bombs often and if they never know when they will be detonated.
Yet it is still reasonable that a mob of people would react in such manner given the possible consequences they are witness to all to often .

(11,843 posts)I would feel sorry for her. It would be ironic if she were forced to wear it, it turned out to be a dud, and in trying to shed the device, it got her killed.
Otherwise, not too much sympathy for someone who would do such a thing.

(3,145 posts)She presented an imminent threat and the people around her reacted to neutralize that threat.
"They might have been holding her ____________ hostage!" That will never excuse trying to detonate a bomb that could have killed dozens of people.
