...from Nancy's district and I can tell you what happened there. Alexandra says her mother wanted to retire years ago but the party is in a bad way financially and the big donors keep talking her into successive terms. I don't think she looks very good health wise but no matter, she ran again and almost uncontested. Outside of the coasts, the party is a complete mess but at least for the short term it's all about keeping the lights on. That's what they're doing.

There will be no fight right now. Key staff has to be paid and office space has to be maintained. The situation is just that bad. The big unions in the manufacturing belt and teacher unions in blue state used to be a reliable source of dollars but it's different now.

This was a really bad one. Ohio, Pennsylvania, Michigan and Wisconsin? Jesus...

I kept asking myself, why would Pelosi want to continue? What's in it for her? Maybe she feels an obligation to "keep the lights on."

I have several former classmates that worked for the Clinton campaign and they have all indicated the party infrastructure is in an abysmal state. You should not have to PAY people to phone bank for your candidate. Yet that's what they were doing because there weren't enough volunteers.

In all the discussions regarding why Clinton lost, we don't really discuss the role Obama played in the decimation of the party and the party infrastructure. Regardless of Clinton's flaws, if we'd had a strong party infrastructure--- volunteers, office space, etc, we would have won. We got beat because we didn't have people on the ground to manage compliance with the new voter ID and registration requirements in the southern states. We got beat because we lacked the technological talent to help defend us against Russian hacks.

We are in desperate need of true leadership of this party. We have failed to cultivate the talent necessary to fight the fascist Republicans.

I really believe the youth and often-bashed millennials are the ones that are going to help dig us out of this mess.

After the past 8 yrs, it doesn't seem possible, but I am hoping they are building alliances and whipping filibuster support from some GOP congress members. A lot of them have worked together for decades, so more may be possible than we realize.

The Democrats need to start to do their own incorporation of dis-satified Republicans, and especially libertarians.

Libertarians are a small group, but are the most vocal and activist of the Republican sub-groups.
They share several issues in common with Democrats:

Prison reform
Abortion rights and freedom from religion
Ending the drug war
Limited military
Holding corporations responsible for environmental damage
Ending corporate welfare and corporate-government cronyism
Immigration reform (not banning and punishing)
Civil rights for minorities (see Rand Paul's speeches on this subject)
and still to be determined: 'Individual Rights'

By incorporating the Libertarians, the Democrats won't greatly increase their numbers, but they will greatly diminish the voice of the Republican Party. Go for it!
